The Quality & Sanitation Manager is responsible for overseeing the Company's Quality and Sanitation department to ensure that all products are manufactured safely, consistently, and in compliance with applicable food safety, quality, sanitation, regulatory, and Company requirements.
This is a hands-on, floor-focused management position. The successful candidate is expected to spend the majority of their shift on the production floor, actively monitoring manufacturing processes, conducting and overseeing quality checks, identifying potential food safety or quality concerns, establishing, maintaining, and enforcing effective sanitation standards, procedures, and practices throughout the facility.
The position requires a strong balance of practical production-floor knowledge, quality control, food safety, sanitation, documentation, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Quality Control & Production Floor Oversight
- Spend the majority of the shift on the production floor monitoring product quality and food safety.
- Conduct and oversee routine quality control checks throughout the production process.
- Monitor product specifications, including appearance, weight, temperature, texture, consistency, packaging, labeling, and other applicable quality requirements.
- Perform and verify required temperature checks and ensure appropriate corrective action is taken when results fall outside established limits.
- Monitor production processes to identify quality concerns, deviations, or potential food safety risks.
- Ensure production employees follow established quality, food safety, GMP, and operational procedures.
- Identify issues early and work with Production to prevent defective or non-conforming products from continuing through the process.
- Investigate quality concerns and assist in determining root causes and appropriate corrective actions.
- Conduct regular floor inspections and quality audits.
- Verify that quality control procedures are being completed accurately and consistently.
- Support product holds, releases, rework, and disposition decisions where required.
- Communicate quality concerns promptly to Production and Management.
2. Quality Assurance & Food Safety
- Maintain and enforce the Company's quality assurance and food safety programs.
- Ensure compliance with GMPs, HACCP requirements, allergen controls, sanitation standards, traceability requirements, and applicable food safety legislation and regulations.
- Monitor critical control points and other applicable preventive controls.
- Verify that required quality and food safety checks are completed and properly documented.
- Participate in internal inspections, customer audits, regulatory inspections, and third-party audits.
- Identify gaps in food safety and quality systems and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Assist with investigating customer complaints, product quality issues, and food safety concerns.
- Maintain appropriate records related to quality, food safety, inspections, corrective actions,
and verification activities.
- Ensure required documentation is accurate, complete, current, and readily available.
3. Sanitation Department Management
- Have overall responsibility for the Company's Sanitation Department.
- Directly supervise and manage the Sanitation Supervisor and sanitation team.
- Establish and maintain effective cleaning and sanitation standards throughout the facility.
- Ensure production areas, equipment, utensils, food-contact surfaces, floors, drains, walls, and other applicable areas are cleaned and sanitized according to established procedures and schedules.
- Develop, maintain, and monitor sanitation schedules and procedures.
- Verify sanitation effectiveness through inspections, pre-operational inspections, environmental monitoring where applicable, and other verification activities.
- Ensure appropriate cleaning chemicals, concentrations, temperatures, contact times, and sanitation methods are used correctly.
- Ensure sanitation employees are properly trained in cleaning procedures, chemical handling, GMPs, food safety, and workplace safety.
- Monitor sanitation performance and address deficiencies promptly.
- Work closely with Production and Maintenance to coordinate sanitation activities and ensure equipment is appropriately cleaned and maintained.
- Ensure sanitation records and documentation are completed accurately and maintained appropriately.
- Investigate recurring sanitation issues and implement corrective and preventive measures.
4. Documentation & Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate and organized quality, food safety, and sanitation records.
- Review production-floor documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
- Ensure quality checks, temperature records, sanitation records, inspections, corrective actions, and other required documents are completed on time.
- Identify documentation gaps and ensure they are corrected.
- Maintain records relating to non-conforming products, corrective actions, customer complaints, sanitation deficiencies, and quality investigations.
- Prepare reports and summaries for Management as required.
- Ensure documentation supports traceability and audit requirements.
5. Corrective & Preventive Action
- Investigate quality, sanitation, and food safety deviations.
- Determine root causes and implement appropriate corrective actions.
- Monitor corrective actions to ensure they are completed effectively.
- Identify recurring issues and develop preventive measures.
- Follow up with responsible departments to ensure deficiencies are resolved.
- Escalate significant quality or food safety concerns to Senior Management immediately.
6.
Team Leadership & Training
- Lead, supervise, coach, and develop Quality and Sanitation employees.
- Establish clear expectations for quality and sanitation performance.
- Provide training and ongoing guidance to employees regarding GMPs, food safety, quality standards, sanitation procedures, and documentation.
- Monitor employee performance and address performance concerns appropriately.
- Promote accountability and consistency within the Quality and Sanitation teams.
- Work collaboratively with Production, Maintenance, Warehouse, and other departments to maintain overall facility standards.
7. Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve product quality, food safety, sanitation effectiveness, and operational consistency.
- Develop and implement improvements to quality control and sanitation processes.
- Use quality data, inspection results, complaints, and production-floor observations to identify trends and areas for improvement.
- Work with Management and other departments to reduce waste, defects, rework, customer complaints, and sanitation deficiencies.
- Promote a culture where quality and food safety are the responsibility of everyone in the organization.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary education in Food Science, Food Safety, Quality Assurance, Microbiology, or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Food Safety, or a related role within food manufacturing; bakery or high-volume food production experience is strongly preferred.
- Previous supervisory or management experience is required.
- Strong understanding of GMPs, HACCP, food safety, sanitation, allergen control, and quality control practices.
- Practical experience conducting or overseeing production-floor quality checks.
- Experience with temperature monitoring, product inspections, process verification, and quality documentation.
- Experience overseeing or managing sanitation operations in a food manufacturing environment is an asset.
- Strong understanding of sanitation procedures, cleaning chemicals, sanitation verification, and pre-operational inspections.
- Strong documentation, organization, and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to identify quality and food safety issues quickly and take appropriate action.
- Solid problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Strong leadership, accountability, and decision-making skills.
Pay: $70,000.00-$80,000.00 per hour
