The Opportunity

As part of the Grande Prairie team, our Support Staff facilitate the planning, delivery, and evaluation of the 1:1 Reading Support Program at local elementary schools. The program aims to improve the reading, writing, and comprehension skills of children between the ages of 5-12 years comprising of a diverse population including First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students. Reporting to the Community Coordinator, the program staff will work independently and collaboratively to support volunteers, tutor students, and complete administrative tasks.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:





- Collaborate with United for Literacy staff and liaise with school administrators to coordinate program delivery (including the distribution and collection of learner registration forms, generating a list of learners, creating a tutoring schedule etc.)
- Read one-on-one and in small groups with children and youth with an aim to improve their reading, comprehension and writing skills
- Competently deliver a high-quality literacy program by implementing resources and strategies that align with our student-centered approach
- As time permits and with CC approval, support school-related literacy initiatives and create additional learning opportunities/resources for implementation across all schools
- Conduct reading assessments and evaluations to determine and track learner progress
- Support a small team of volunteers to tutor children and youth
- Perform administrative tasks as required, including tracking attendance, conducting learner assessments, collecting surveys/testimonials, entering data on Teams, uploading photos etc.

- Experience delivering informal learning opportunities for children and youth
- Experience working with diverse groups, ages, and diverse populations
- Excellent spoken and written communication
- Very strong administrative and organizational skills
- Positive,



resourceful, adaptable, and reliable
- Able to think critically, solve problems and manage details
- Ability to effectively mentor others
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and adapt to a changing environment/schedule
- Comfortable working with computers, including basic knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Candidates must have or will have to complete a criminal record check including a Vulnerable Sector Search (costs will be reimbursed)

Additional Assets:

- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
- Experience or interest in the fields of formal/informal education, teaching, or community literacy programming
- Experience working with First Nation, Métis and Inuit individuals or communities
