This position is for The Ottawa Missions', Chef Ric's 384 Rideau Street location.

Position Purpose:
Reporting to the General Manager of Chef Ric's, the Retail Storefront Clerk is the initial point of contact for a diverse customer base. They must have the ability to effectively communicate with customers. They will work with the Coordinator of the Food Services Training Program (FSTP) to train the FSTP students in the retail store front.
The Retail Storefront
Clerk is a team-oriented person who is able to switch roles quickly between performing storefront and food preparation tasks and attending to the needs of customers.
Major Responsibilities
Daily:
- Taking customer orders, accept payment and serving customers at food counters.
- Prepare, heat and finish cooking simple food items.
- Taking customer orders, accepting payment and giving change
- Answering customer questions about menu items and serving customers at counters or buffet tables
- Preparing and serving food such as sandwiches, salads, pastries and non-alcoholic beverages
- Cleaning, peeling, slicing and trimming food items using manual and electric appliances
- Stocking refrigerators, freezers, cupboards and sandwich bars
- Keeping records of the quantities of food used
- Performing required administrative duties, which includes processing,
in a timely manner, required paperwork, and meeting all necessary deadlines.
- Cleaning and sanitizing kitchen areas including, work surfaces, cupboards and storage areas, as well as disposing of kitchen garbage
- Work with the FSTP Coordinator, Manager and Assistant Manager of Catering Services to train the FSTP students and volunteers, and initiate daily concrete and measurable goals and objectives, provide guidance, coaching, motivation and support in attaining these goals
- Meet on a regular basis with the Manager and Assistant Manager of Catering Services to discuss operational issues
- Ensure an atmosphere of mutual respect and positive working relationships among clients, volunteers, staff, public, police, health facilities, other shelters and community organizations
- Other duties as assigned.
Health & Safety:
- Adherence to all Health & Safety policies including fulfilling requirements for annual compliance training
- Ensure all standards regarding hygienic food storage, preparation and serving are maintained in order to meet all the requirements of inspections by the Ottawa Public Health and Long Term Care Branch
Retail Program:
- In conjunction with the General Manager and Manager of Catering Services, suggest retail menus that will work for the store front.
Other Requirements
Education:
- Secondary School Diploma
- Food Handler Certification
Experience:
- Previous culinary experience in a cafe/restaurant with robust culinary production skills
- Experience using a Cash Register
- Experience handling money
Qualifications:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills along with the ability to build relationships
- Strong problem solving skills
- Strong mentorship and training skills
- Ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint)

- Valid G driver’s license
- Bilingualism considered an asset
Working Conditions
- Must work to, sometimes strident, deadlines, manage and respond to competing priorities
- Ability to work flexible hours and schedules, weekends and holidays may be required, as well as mornings and evenings
- Overtime as required
- General Commercial Kitchen setting
