Professional services include project consulting and management, substation electrical and relay settings design, automation logic, SCADA programming, network design and configuration, cyber security assessment and planning. HV Logic Ltd. has experience delivering results for a wide range of clients in the electric utilities, oil and gas, and renewables sectors in Alberta.
To support the growth of the company, HV Logic Ltd. is currently looking for a Senior P&C; Settings Engineer that is willing to learn or expand on specialized skills that are currently in high demand for the power industry. The successful candidate will be joining a small company with 30 years of industry experience.
Position Overview The Senior P&C; Engineer will provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise in protection and control engineering, leading complex projects from concept through commissioning. This role requires strong hands-on experience with relay protection systems, coordination studies, and substation design, as well as the ability to mentor junior engineers and interface directly with clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development, review, and approval of protection and control relay settings and coordination studies for systems ranging from 4 kV to 500 kV.
- Prepare and review relay configuration files, coordination study reports, and technical documentation for utility, renewable, generation, and industrial clients.
- Define and review project P&C; scope of work, including selection of protection philosophies, schemes, and relay platforms.
- Perform advanced protection modeling, simulation, and coordination studies using software such as Aspen OneLiner, CAPE, ETAP, and CYME.
- Develop and review substation Protection & Control documentation, including:
- Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
- Logic diagrams and schematics
- Wiring diagrams
- Bill of Materials (BOM)
- Conduct and review specialized protection studies, including arc-flash assessments and NERC PRC compliance studies.
- Provide technical oversight and support during commissioning, including site testing, troubleshooting, and energization activities.
- Serve as a technical point of contact for clients and coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams, including electrical, substation, SCADA, and commissioning personnel.
- Mentor and support junior engineers, providing technical guidance, review, and knowledge transfer.
- Contribute to internal standards, best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration in Alberta or other provinces in Canada.
- Minimum 8 Years of experience in Protection & Control engineering, including relay settings, coordination, commissioning, or substation design.
- Advanced knowledge of power system protection principles, including:
- Overcurrent protection
- Distance protection
- Differential protection
- Symmetrical component analysis
- Robust proficiency with protection modeling and simulation software (Expert at least one of Aspen OneLiner, CAPE, ETAP, CYME).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Proven ability to work independently while managing multiple projects and priorities.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and advanced problem-solving skills.
- Willingness and ability to travel to client sites as required.
- A clean background check is mandatory.
Assets (Preferred Experience)
- Practical experience with IEC 61850 systems and digital substations.
- Knowledge of high-voltage equipment, including circuit breakers, power transformers, and protection IEDs.
- Experience integrating and commissioning relay protection systems.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or Bentley MicroStation.
- Prior experience supporting utilities, renewable energy projects, oil and gas, or industrial facilities.
- Experience in technical leadership, peer review, or mentoring roles.
