Position Overview

The RN – Operating Room provides safe, high-quality patient care throughout the perioperative journey. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, RPNs, and the broader perioperative team to support safe and efficient surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Provide safe and compassionate nursing care to surgical patients.

Perform circulating and/or scrub duties based on experience and competency.

Prepare and maintain the operating room for surgical procedures.

Support patient positioning, surgical preparation, and transfers.

Maintain aseptic technique and infection prevention standards.

Prepare and handle surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.

Complete surgical counts and perioperative documentation.

Monitor patient status and communicate changes promptly.

Administer medications and treatments within scope of practice.

Support surgical safety, patient identification, and site verification processes.





Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, RPNs, and the multidisciplinary team.

Participate in quality improvement, education, and professional development.

RN with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario

Operating Room certification from an accredited college program– Certificate required

Current BCLS certification is required

Proven focus to provide excellent patient care, in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner

Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary team of care providers, with emphasis on assessment, education, prevention, maintenance, and restoration of patient health

Qualifications

2-4 years' recent experience in an acute care setting in the Surgical Suite / Ambulatory workplace that includes and not limited to assisting, scrubbing /circulating and /or /providing retraction / abdominal thrust for procedures of the operating room, and ambulatory services, as well as services of endoscopy, urology and minor surgery – required

Ability to work independently within the Surgical /Ambulatory services environment to maintain patient flow

Demonstrated knowledge of surgical / ambulatory procedures (including set up) and the continuum of care for the surgical patient that includes the pre-intra-post surgery patient experience





Must be capable to set up and care for minor and major surgery procedures and anticipate the needs of patients and physicians

Proven motivation to pursue educational goals

Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team

Implement plan of care including independent and interdependent nursing functions

Assessing and understanding the unique needs of the surgical patient

Strong proficiency and willingness to work at the full scope of practice (as outlined by CNO)
