About Project LiteracyProject Literacy, a registered charity provides free literacy support for adults, immigrants, refugees, seniors, families, and children. We have been operating continuously since 1986 and are the only literacy focused charity in the Central Okanagan. We have a large volunteer base of over 200 active volunteers and support over 300 individuals each year.Job DescriptionThe Education Coordinator coordinates several programs taking place throughout the year. This includes:Primary Focus: The One to One In-School Reading Support Program for students in grades 1-4 (from October to May) currently operating in 14 elementary schoolsThe Summer Reading Program (during July and August)The Digital Literacy Program for Seniors (September to June)Relief support for The One-to-One Adult Tutoring ProgramThis position involves working extensively with adult volunteers, including volunteer assessment, training, and scheduling.Responsibilities/Daily TasksOne to One Reading Program (Primary responsibility)Coordinate the program which is currently taking place in 14 elementary schoolsAdvise other interested elementary schools of the programMeet with elementary teachers to determine how many of their students require reading supportCoordinate volunteer tutor placement in elementary schoolsTrain volunteer tutors, and support their tutoring with studentsProvide regular updates and program reportsCoordinate volunteer appreciation events and gatheringsThis program runs from October to JuneSummer Reading Program (Primary Responsibility)Teaching children in grades 1-4 improved reading skillsDevelop summer reading program curriculum – the program runs half days Monday to Thursday throughout July and AugustIn collaboration with elementary school teachers, register qualifying students for the Summer Reading Program.



The summer reading program supports 36 students over July and August.Register students and advise parents of the commitments to the summer programDigital Literacy Program (Support Position)Provide assessments of seniors’ digital literacy needsMatch seniors with a volunteer tutorMonitor tutor/learner match to ensure digital literacy goals are metInterview and assess volunteer tutorsOne to One Adult Tutoring Program (Support Position)Interview learners and provide standardized assessment instruments to determine their literacy levelInterview new volunteers, conduct criminal record checks and reference reviewsMatch volunteer tutors with learnersDevelop an individualized assessment-based education plan for each learnerPlan training workshops, prepare training materials and conduct tutor trainingProvide ongoing educational support to tutor-learner pairs as neededOther ResponsibilitiesPerform general administrative duties facilitating information flow to staff, educators, schools, tutors and learnersMonitor learning resources and recommend appropriate additionsMaintain the communication network to appropriate community service providers,



and participate in community tables focusing on community literacy and early literacyKeep up to date records on learner and tutor intake and activity data and provide programs reports as neededMaintain learner and tutor file information and protect confidentialityParticipate in public awareness and fundraising events held throughout the yearRelation of the position to others in the organizationReports directly to Executive DirectorWorks closely with other Education CoordinatorsWorks cooperatively with the Office AdministratorSupervises Summer StudentRequired QualificationsBachelor’s degree in education, Social Sciences or equivalentExperience training and coordinating volunteersExperience working with the elementary school systemExperience with educational assessment and evaluation strategiesTraining and experience in developing lesson and program plansExperience coordinating and leading summer reading programs for children in grades 1-4Ability to work independently and cooperatively with othersStrong Microsoft product skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)Experience with volunteer management software (i.E.: Better Impact)Excellent spoken and written English skillsStrong communication and interpersonal skillsGood conflict management skillsYour own transportation is required for this positionTravel across the Central Okanagan Region is requiredAbility to speak additional languages an assetSalary$27 - 30/hour (depending on experience and qualifications)Health Perks PlanHealth Benefits Plan (after end of probation period)Days of workMonday to FridayHours34 hours per weekWork Location107-2293 Leckie Road, Kelowna, BCA criminal record check for working with vulnerable children is required for this position.Apply here or send a Cover Letter and Resumé via email to [email protected] deadline is Friday, June 19, 2026.
