Toolmaker – Custom Plastic Extrusion

About the Position
We are looking for an experienced Toolmaker to join our custom plastic extrusion operation. The successful candidate will be responsible for building, modifying, repairing, maintaining, and fine-tuning extrusion tooling used in the production of custom plastic profiles.
This position would be well suited to a hands-on toolmaker who is comfortable working independently, solving tooling issues, and making precise adjustments to extrusion dies and related tooling. Part-time hours are available for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, modify, repair, and maintain plastic extrusion dies and tooling.
- Set up and operate manual milling machines, lathes, and surface grinders.
- Use a die grinder and other hand tools to make precise tooling adjustments.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and tooling specifications.
- Perform fitting, grinding, machining, polishing, and finishing of extrusion tooling.
- Make tooling adjustments and modifications to achieve required part dimensions and quality.
- Troubleshoot tooling issues and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Work closely with production and quality personnel to resolve extrusion and tooling problems.
- Maintain tooling to ensure dies and related components are production-ready.
- Assist with new tooling development and modifications to existing dies.
- Measure components using precision measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Work independently while managing multiple tooling requirements and priorities.
Required Skills & Experience
- Previous experience as a Toolmaker, Machinist, Die Maker, or similar role.
- Robust hands-on experience operating:
- Manual Lathe
- Milling Machine
- Surface Grinder
- Die Grinder
- Experience with fitting, grinding, machining, and finishing tooling.
- Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work to tight tolerances.
- Good mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
- Experience with plastic extrusion tooling is considered a strong asset, but candidates with strong general toolmaking experience will also be considered.
What We're Looking For The ideal candidate is a practical, experienced toolmaker who takes pride in their work and can look at a tooling problem, determine what needs to be done, and make the necessary adjustments. We are particularly interested in someone who is hands-on, mechanically minded, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a small manufacturing environment.
Compensation & Schedule
- Competitive hourly wage based on experience.
