About This Position

This is an individualized one-to-one support position working with one adult in his family home and community. Unlike positions within The Ottawa Rotary Home's respite or Supported Living programs, this role is based in the individual's own home and is focused exclusively on supporting him to live his daily life, pursue his personal goals, participate in his community, and make choices about how he spends his time.

The successful candidate will become part of a small support team that works closely with the individual and his family. Because the work takes place one-to-one, this position requires someone who is comfortable working independently, building a consistent relationship, and adapting support to the individual's preferences, routines, communication style, and goals.

Schedule:

Two weekday shifts from 3:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. plus one weekend shift per week. Weekend hours will be determined in collaboration with the individual and his family.

The Individual You Will Support The individual is an adult with physical and complex medical needs who uses an augmentative communication device. He requires physical assistance and specialized health-related supports but is actively involved in directing his own life and making choices about his activities and routines.

A significant part of this role is getting to know him as an individual — his interests, preferences, communication, routines, and goals — and supporting him to participate in the activities and experiences that are meaningful to him.

What Your Shifts Will Look Like

Your work will vary depending on the individual's plans and needs for the day. Responsibilities may include:

- Providing dedicated 1:1 support in his family home and community
- Supporting personal goals, choices, routines, and independence
- Assisting with personal care, including bathing, dressing, toileting, and feeding
- Supporting mobility, positioning, lifts, and transfers
- Helping plan and participate in recreational, social, and community activities

- Supporting communication using his augmentative communication device
- Administering medications and completing individualized health interventions following training
- Providing support related to G-tube care, seizure management, pain management, and other identified complex-care needs
- Recognizing and responding appropriately to changes in his health or comfort
- Communicating with the individual, his family, and members of his support and healthcare team
- Completing documentation related specifically to his individualized support plan

Specialized Training You are not expected to arrive knowing every aspect of this individual's support needs.

The Ottawa Rotary Home provides individualized training and orientation specific to the person you will be supporting. Depending on your previous experience, this may include:

- Medication administration
- G-tube care
- Seizure management
- Pain management
- Protected lifts, transfers, and positioning
- Individualized health protocols
- Augmentative communication
- Emergency procedures specific to the individual

Training is focused on developing the knowledge and confidence required to safely support this individual in his own home. Who We Are Looking For

This position may be a particularly good fit for someone who enjoys one-to-one work rather than a group or program environment.

Developmental Services Worker (DSW) education is strongly preferred. We will also consider applicants with relevant education and experience supporting people with physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, or complex medical needs.

The right person will be:

- Comfortable developing a consistent one-to-one working relationship
- Respectful of an individual's right to make choices and direct his own life
- Comfortable providing hands-on personal and physical support
- Able to work independently in a private home
- Reliable and consistent, recognizing the importance of scheduled support to the individual and his family
- Patient and attentive to non-traditional methods of communication
- Interested in community inclusion and helping someone pursue meaningful personal goals
- Comfortable learning individualized medical and support procedures

Qualifications & Requirements

- DSW education is strongly preferred, or relevant education/experience in a related field
- Experience supporting individuals with physical disabilities and/or complex medical needs is an asset
- Ability to safely provide personal care and physical assistance
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently while remaining part of a broader support team
- Current First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain
- CPI training is an asset
- Willingness to complete medication administration and all individualized training required for the position
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Check

About The Ottawa Rotary Home The Ottawa Rotary Home is a non-profit organization supporting children, youth, and adults with physical disabilities and complex medical needs. This position is part of our individualized support services but is not based at a Rotary Home program location. If you are looking for a role where you can get to know one person well and provide consistent, individualized support that makes a direct difference in his everyday life, we encourage you to apply.
