Job Overview
AZ/ ARZ/ DZ Driver (Salt-Sand and Snow Hauling Driver)
Reports to: Operations Manager, Dispatcher and/or Crew Lead
Summary:
The AZ/DZ Driver (Salt/Sand and Snow Hauling Driver) is responsible for safely transporting and delivering bulk salt, sand, sand/salt mixtures, snow and other approved materials during winter operations. Drivers are expected to be available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week when required by snow and ice events. The position includes safe operation of commercial vehicles, loading/unloading coordination, compliance with commercial vehicle requirements, accurate trip and material records, and safe work around active snow operations.

Responsibilities:
- Respond promptly to dispatch calls and winter hauling assignments
- Report fit for duty and free from the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medicines that may affect safe commercial vehicle operation
- Complete required pre-trip, en-route and post-trip inspections and promptly report defects
- Safely operate assigned AZ/DZ commercial vehicles in accordance with licence class, vehicle limitations and road/weather conditions
- Transport bulk salt, sand, sand/salt mixtures and other approved winter materials between suppliers, yards and customer sites
- Haul snow from customer sites to approved snow storage or disposal locations
- Coordinate safely with loader operators during loading and unloading and remain clear of equipment hazards
- Confirm loads, destinations, quantities or weights where applicable and follow all load securement and weight requirements
- Follow assigned routes and site access instructions and avoid unauthorized stops or deviations unless approved or required for safety
- Maintain accurate driver logs, trip reports, inspection records, material tickets, scale tickets, fuel records and other required documentation
- Communicate delays, breakdowns, unsafe road conditions, site access issues, load concerns and incidents immediately
- Keep truck cab, lights, mirrors, windows, steps and safety equipment reasonably clean and serviceable throughout the shift
- Perform basic maintenance and small repairs within training and authorization
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment
- Comply with all company policies and procedures and applicable commercial vehicle requirements
- Work in accordance with all applicable health and safety laws and regulations
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Ontario AZ and/or DZ driver’s license appropriate to assigned vehicle
- Safe driving record and ability to provide a current driver’s abstract upon request
- Commercial driving experience; winter hauling experience is preferred
- Knowledge of driver logbooks, pre-trip/post-trip inspections, maintenance/repair reports and trip reports
- Ability to safely operate in snow, ice, reduced visibility and congested worksites
- Ability to read and interpret maps,
directions, tickets and load information
- Valuable analytical and problem-solving skills
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently with little supervision and as part of a winter operations team
Work Conditions:
- Driving between yards, suppliers, disposal locations and customer sites
- On-call hours including nights, weekends and holidays
- Long periods of sitting and commercial vehicle operation
- Frequent climbing into/out of trucks and exposure to loading areas
- Fast-paced work under changing route, weather and site conditions
- Regular work near heavy equipment and moving vehicles
- Outdoor exposure to extreme cold, snow, freezing rain, wind, dust, noise and wet conditions
