Communications Specialist – Intermediate
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Communications Specialist – Intermediate to provide professional communications services supporting executive communications, organizational change, employee engagement, technology initiatives, strategic communications, stakeholder engagement, and operational communications.
The successful candidate will work closely with executives, senior leaders, managers, subject matter experts, project teams, and stakeholders to develop clear, consistent, timely, and audience-appropriate communications.
The ideal candidate will have strong skilled writing and editing skills, advanced presentation-development capabilities, and the ability to translate complex business and technical information into concise, easy-to-understand communications.
Position Details
Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Work Arrangement: 100% onsite
Duration: October 12, 2026 – September 30, 2027
Contract Term: 12 months
Potential Extension: Up to 24 additional months
Hours: 36.25 hours per week / 7.25 hours per day
Standard Hours: Monday to Friday, approximately 8:15 AM – 4:30 PM MT

Key Responsibilities
- Develop executive communications, leadership messages, organizational announcements, branch updates, and employee communications.
- Prepare recurring organizational communications using information provided by leadership.
- Develop communication strategies and plans supporting organizational transformation and technology initiatives.
- Create professional communication products including:
- Executive presentations
- Briefing notes
- Speaking notes
- Newsletters
- FAQs
- Infographics
- Visual communication materials
- Develop branding, visual identity, templates, and communication standards for initiatives.
- Translate complex business and technical information into clear, concise, audience-appropriate communications.
- Support organizational change initiatives through employee engagement and change communications.
- Review, edit, and quality-assure communications prepared by leadership and project teams.
- Review operational communications such as service outage, maintenance, incident, and service-change notifications and recommend improvements.
- Develop standardized communication templates, guidance, and best practices.
- Collaborate with executives, managers,
subject matter experts, and project teams to gather information and develop communications.
- Develop presentations and supporting materials for executive meetings, leadership forums, town halls, and stakeholder engagement sessions.
- Provide communications advice and recommendations regarding messaging, audiences, and communication approaches.
- Ensure communications follow applicable organizational standards, visual identity requirements, and plain-language principles.
Required Qualifications
Education
One of the following
- University graduation in Communications, Commerce, or a related field plus a minimum of four years of progressively responsible related experience; or
- Diploma in Communications, Commerce, or a related field plus a minimum of six years of progressively responsible related experience.
Equivalent combinations of directly related education and experience may be considered.
Professional Experience
Candidates must demonstrate
- 2+ years developing and implementing effective communication plans.
- 3+ years developing professional internal and organizational communications, including executive/leadership messages, employee communications, organizational announcements, newsletters, briefing materials, and related communication products.
- 3+ years developing professional presentations and visual communication materials for senior leadership and organizational audiences.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint .
- 2+ years reviewing and evaluating existing communications and recommending or implementing improvements to clarity, consistency, effectiveness, and audience suitability.
- 3+ years of professional business writing and editing, including translating complex business or technical information into clear, concise, audience-appropriate communications.
- 2+ years working directly with executives, senior leaders, managers, and subject matter experts to gather information, provide communications advice,
and develop communication products.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with diverse stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications The following experience would be considered an asset:
- 2+ years developing branding, visual identity, templates, infographics, or other visual communication products.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva , or comparable tools.
- 1+ year developing communications related to technology service disruptions, outages, planned maintenance, incidents, or service changes.
- 2+ years developing communications within a technology, IT, digital transformation, or similarly technical environment.
- 1+ year of experience within government, the broader public sector, justice, courts, or another complex regulated organization.
- 2+ years supporting communications for organizational transformation, change management, restructuring, or significant organizational change initiatives.
- 1+ year using SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, or other digital platforms to publish or manage organizational communications.

Additional Requirements Successful candidates may be required to complete applicable organizational training, which may include privacy, access-to-information, cybersecurity/security awareness, information management, workplace conduct, and other mandatory training.
A current criminal record check and enhanced security clearance may also be required as a condition of the engagement.
