Custodian/Facilities Coordinator
Job purpose The Custodian/Facilities Coordinator ensures the daily operation of the church building. They make sure the building is safe, clean, and ready for user groups. They secure the building and welcome members, user groups, and the public.
This role involves hands-on custodial and basic maintenance with light facilities coordination, working independently, anticipating building needs, and safeguarding property, under the guidance of the Property Chair/Manager.
Prior custodial/facilities coordination experience preferred but not required.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Cleaning and minor maintenance, i.e., activities that do not require the services of a licensed tradesperson;
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting (up to 50 pounds), bending, climbing ladders and standing for extended periods;
- Reliable, self-motivated, ability to multi-task, and able to work independently;
- Committed to maintaining a clean and safe environment;
- Ability to work flexible, but regular hours that include evenings and weekends;
- Ability to work respectfully and effectively with diverse people, experience working with unhoused, marginalized or vulnerable people is an asset;
- Training Certification or willingness to undertake training in WHMIS & Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and Working At Heights;
- Awareness of the mission and goals of St. Matthews United Church.
COMPENSATION The starting salary is $17.95 - 20.00 per hour, with a probationary period of six months. The position includes enrolment in both the United Church of Canada pension and benefits plan subject to eligibility requirements.
Conditions of Employment

- Work Location: In person.
- Expected hours: 25 to 33 hours per week from September to June, with occasional 40 to 44-hour weeks for special events.

Detailed Position Requirements
Cleaning and Custodial
- Wash floors and vacuum.
- Clean banisters, posts, baseboards and other building surfaces.
- Collect and properly dispose of garbage and recycling.
- Maintain washrooms and replenish paper and other supplies.
- Help maintain the building in a manner that reduces pest and sanitation problems.
Building Maintenance and Facilities
- Monitor the building and grounds and identify maintenance, safety, security and supply needs.
- Replace burnt-out light bulbs and undertake straightforward maintenance of dispensers, fixtures and similar equipment.
- Perform minor maintenance and repairs within the scope of the position.
- Identify problems requiring specialized repair and ensure they are brought forward promptly.
- Coordinate access for contractors, repair technicians and service providers as required.
- Monitor custodial and building supplies and identify replenishment needs.
- Take responsibility for routine day-to-day facilities issues, resolving matters independently where appropriate and escalating significant issues when necessary.
- Support opening, closing and security of the building as required.
- Clear snow in the winter and tend to grass/weeds in summer
- Maintain boiler system
- Ability to perform maintenance checks on the boiler system
- Make sure the establishment meets all safety requirements
- Ability to operate industrial cleaning equipment or snow removal equipment
- Ability to work independently
- Understanding of health and safety regulations
Building Use and Set-up
- Complete room set-up and take-down for worship, meetings, rentals, community programs and other activities.
- Review upcoming building use and anticipate cleaning, set-up, access and facilities requirements.
- Help ensure spaces are ready for church and user groups using the building.
- Respond to routine facilities needs arising while the building is in use.
Community and Building Relationships
- Work cooperatively and diplomatically with staff, volunteers, user groups, worship communities, and other building users.
- Interact respectfully and effectively with unhoused and vulnerable community members.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries and communicate building expectations respectfully.
- Use tact, diplomacy and de-escalation skills when responding to challenging situations.
- Help maintain a welcoming, safe and respectful environment for everyone using the building.
Communication and Accountability
- Work independently while following established building procedures, schedules and priorities.
- Raise significant safety, security, maintenance or operational concerns promptly.
- Maintain appropriate checklists or records relating to custodial and facilities work.
Qualifications and Experience
- Relevant experience in custodial work, facilities, building operations, property maintenance, or a similar position.
- Ability to perform the essential physical duties associated with custodial and facilities work.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to work independently, organize priorities and recognize what needs attention without continuous direction.
- Practical maintenance, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to remain calm, establish appropriate boundaries and de-escalate difficult situations.
- Ability to work respectfully with people of diverse backgrounds, beliefs and circumstances.
- Reliability and good judgement.
- Experience working effectively with unhoused, marginalized or vulnerable people is an asset.
- Experience in a community, nonprofit, faith-based or other public-facing environment is an asset.
Pay: $17.95-$20.00 per hour
