Finance Manager

Nature and Scope The Finance Manager is responsible for the overall financial management, stewardship, and administration of YMCA of Southwest Nova Scotia. Reporting directly to the CEO, this position provides strategic and operational leadership in financial planning, budgeting, accounting, reporting, payroll oversight, risk management, and regulatory compliance.

The Finance Manager plays a key role in supporting organizational decision-making by providing accurate financial analysis, recommendations, and reporting that contribute to the achievement of the YMCA's strategic goals and long-term sustainability.

This position requires a high level of professionalism, integrity, discretion, analytical ability, and leadership. The successful candidate must be capable of balancing strategic priorities with day-to-day financial operations in a dynamic, multi-program setting.

This is a full-time position requiring flexibility to work occasional early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as operational requirements dictate.

Duties and Responsibilities The Finance Manager will report directly to the CEO and is responsible for managing the overall financial operations of the organization. Key duties include:

- Financial Planning and Analysis: Developing budgets, forecasts, and long-term financial models to guide business decisions; advising the CEO and senior leadership team on the financial implications of organizational initiatives and project feasibility.
- Accounting Oversight: Implementing and maintaining accounting systems including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, banking, reconciliations, and general ledger, policies, and procedures; ensuring accurate reporting of profit and loss, balance sheets, and cash flows; ensuring accurate management of restricted funds, grants, and designated funding sources; partnering with the CFO in year-end closing processes and coordinating external audit activities, as needed.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring adherence to local and provincial financial regulations, including HST, payroll tax, and PSAB standards.
- Cost Control and Risk Management: Monitoring expenditures,



identifying cost-saving opportunities, and mitigating financial risks across projects and operations.
- Financial Reporting: Assisting in the preparation and submission of financial reports for YMCA Canada and provincial and federal government agencies; ensuring compliance with funding agreements and reporting obligations; providing financial information required for organizational planning and performance measurement; assisting in the development, monitoring, and reporting of grant-funded programs.
- Leadership and Administration: Providing leadership, coaching, and support to staff responsible for finance, payroll, administration, and related functions; collaborating with Centre Managers and department leaders on budget management and financial accountability, as needed; fostering a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and service excellence.
- Stakeholder Liaison: Coordinating with banks, auditors, clients, and government authorities to secure financing, manage audits, and maintain transparency.
- Team Leadership: Providing guidance and support to Centre Managers and staff on financial and payroll matters, IT systems, and general administration.
- Other Duties: Undertakes additional responsibilities and assignments as required to meet organizational priorities, operational needs, and evolving business requirements.

Qualifications

- A university degree in a related field and/or related experience, with a CPA designation is considered an asset.
- Minimum of five (5) years of financial/management experience or equivalent, including supervision of staff.
- Experience in the nonprofit, charitable, childcare, recreation, or community services sector is considered an asset.
- Experience managing multi-department budgets and government-funded programs is preferred.
- Experience preparing audited financial statements and supporting external audits is preferred.
- Knowledge of grant administration and contribution agreement reporting.
- Strong understanding of relevant employment, payroll, and tax legislation.
- Strong knowledge of relevant business technology; experience with Payworks, Xero, and Microsoft Office is considered an asset.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Finance Managers typically require

- Professional Certification: Working toward a CPA designation will be considered.
- Experience: 5-10 years in finance, with managerial experience preferred, especially in sectors such as nonprofit, childcare, or community support.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in ERP and accounting software such as Xero and Payworks.
- Analytical and Strategic Thinking: Ability to interpret financial data, conduct scenario planning, and provide actionable recommendations.
- Leadership and Communication: Robust interpersonal skills to lead teams and collaborate with senior management.

Work Conditions

- Office-based work environment with occasional travel between YMCA locations across South-West Nova Scotia.
- Extended periods of computer and desk work.
- May be required to attend Board, committee, or stakeholder meetings.
- Flexibility to respond to operational priorities outside normal business hours when required.

Salary Range $75953 - $87016
