Heavy Equipment Field Maintenance Manager
Location: Calgary and area

Position Description:
Reporting to the Vice President, the Heavy Equipment Field Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and reliability of Kidco Construction's fleet of heavy construction equipment. This role leads field mechanics and welders, coordinates maintenance activities, provides advanced troubleshooting support, and ensures repairs are completed efficiently, safely, and cost effectively. The Manager serves as the primary maintenance decision-maker and works closely with field operations to maximize fleet availability and minimize equipment downtime.
A key responsibility of this role is providing remote diagnostics whenever possible, determining repair strategies, and dispatching field personnel to support operations.
Responsibilities:
Maintenance Operations
· Receive and assess equipment breakdown and repair requests.
· Diagnose equipment issues remotely whenever possible and develop repair strategies.
· Prioritize maintenance and repair activities based on operational requirements.
· Coordinate repairs with Operations Managers, Superintendents, and field personnel.
· Dispatch field mechanics and welders as required.
· Monitor fleet utilization, reliability, and overall maintenance performance.
· Develop and execute maintenance plans to reduce downtime and improve equipment availability.
Leadership & Supervision
· Lead, coach, and support field mechanics and maintenance personnel.
· Provide technical guidance on complex repairs and equipment issues.
· Conduct regular safety meetings and promote protected work practices.
· Ensure efficient utilization of maintenance resources.
· Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Work Order & Maintenance Oversight
· Review and approve completed work orders.
· Review repair details, maintenance records, labour allocations, and timesheet adjustments entered into E360.
· Verify repair quality and ensure completed work meets company standards.
· Review open work orders and establish completion priorities.
Equipment Performance & Deficiency Management
· Review equipment failure reports and determine corrective actions.
· Review equipment hours reports and develop maintenance strategies based on utilization trends.
· Review deficiency tracking reports and coordinate corrective action plans.
· Identify recurring failures and implement preventative maintenance measures.
· Monitor equipment downtime, maintenance KPIs, and fleet performance trends.
Financial Management
· Review and approve maintenance-related requisitions, purchases, and expenditures.
· Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and maintenance cost management.
· Evaluate repair-versus-replacement decisions and support capital equipment planning.
· Review pricing and recommendations for major repairs and equipment purchases.
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
· Review departmental analytics,
shop productivity reports, and maintenance performance summaries.
· Approve E360 workflow improvements and process enhancements.
· Monitor maintenance trends and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reliability, and cost performance.
· Drive continuous improvement initiatives throughout the department.
Safety & Compliance
· Ensure compliance with company safety programs, policies, and procedures.
· Review SiteDocs submissions, corrective actions, and compliance documentation.
· Investigate equipment-related incidents and failures.
· Ensure maintenance activities comply with company, regulatory, and manufacturer requirements.
Qualifications:
· Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) preferred but not mandatory
· Extensive experience maintaining heavy civil construction equipment including excavators, dozers, loaders, packers, Articulated trucks, scrapers, and support equipment.
· Previous supervisor or management experience preferred.
· Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
· Ability to diagnose equipment issues remotely and direct repair strategies.
· Strong organizational and communication skills.
· Experience with maintenance management software (E360 experience considered a strong asset).
· Proficient computer skills
· Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
