Position:

Under the direction of the BBK Team Leader, the Infant Mental Health Worker provides culturally grounded, holistic, and prevention-focused supports to infants, young children (birth to age six), and their families. Rooted in Anishinaabe ways of knowing, being, and raising children, and grounded in Mino-Biimazowen (0–6), this role supports the emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical well-being of Bkejwanong infants and young children by strengthening connection to family, community, culture, language, and identity from the earliest stages of life. Guided by the teachings of Mino-Bimaadziwin and the understanding that children are sacred gifts, the Infant Mental Health Worker promotes healthy attachment, nurtures belonging, and supports families in raising children in a good way.

Through relationship-based, culturally safe, and community-centred approaches, this position helps create strong foundations for lifelong wellness by honouring Anishinaabe family systems, traditional teachings, Anishinaabemowin, and the sacred role of children within the community.

Requirements:

Education

- Early Childhood Education Diploma or Social Services Worker Diploma preferred.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Safe Food Handling certification (or willingness to obtain).

Experience

- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working with young children and families.
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working within a First Nation or Indigenous community.
- Experience in early childhood, family support, infant mental health, or related programming.
- Experience supporting Anishinaabemowin language use or cultural programming is considered an asset.

Other Requirements

- Ability to work respectfully with all age groups, from infants to Elders.
- Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence, reliable transportation, and proof of insurance.
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Ability to model and promote a healthy, addiction-free lifestyle in a manner that reflects the values of the program and serves as a positive example for children, families, and the community.

Responsibilities: Infant Mental Health Promotion & Early Intervention





- Promote infant and early childhood mental health through education, prevention, and early intervention strategies across the community.
- Support the healthy social, emotional, mental, and spiritual development of infants and young children through culturally safe and relationship-based programming.
- Assist in identifying developmental, emotional, and behavioural concerns early and connect families to appropriate supports and services.
- Provide referrals to internal and external programs and services as needed.

Family & Parenting Support

- Support healthy attachment and caregiver-child relationships through education, modelling, and family engagement.
- Collaborate with Family Support Workers and BBK staff to deliver parenting education and family supports, including programs such as Circle of Security and Nurturing the Seed.
- Provide orientation and support to new families participating in BBK programming, including Biibiins Incentives.
- Promote healthy family relationships through culturally grounded family activities and gatherings.

Culturally Grounded Programming

- Integrate Anishinaabe teachings, values, and cultural practices into all aspects of programming and service delivery.
- Educate families on the importance of the Seven Stages of Life teachings, with emphasis on Mino Bimaadziwin and holistic wellness.
- Support and participate in family-centred cultural and land-based activities such as socials, feasts, family dances, and seasonal gatherings.
- Model and encourage the use of Anishinaabemowin with staff, children, and families in everyday programming.

Program Delivery & Community Engagement

- Assist in the delivery of safe, age-appropriate activities that support the developmental needs of children ages 0–6 within existing BBK programming.
- Work cooperatively with BBK staff and other community programs to deliver child-centred activities and special events.
- Promote awareness of infant mental health and early childhood well-being within the community.

Program Administration & Accountability





- Maintain accurate records, statistics, and monthly reports in accordance with program requirements.
- Monitor and evaluate program success through attendance tracking, participant feedback, and program evaluations.
- Organize and maintain program files, records, and resources (electronic and hardcopy).
- Purchase supplies and materials required for programming in accordance with approved procedures.

Health, Safety & Environment

- Assist with the set-up, cleaning, and disinfecting of playroom and program spaces before and after programming.
- Support safe, clean, and welcoming environments for children, families, and staff.
- Maintain confidentiality of all staff, client, and community information.
- Maintain awareness of personal well-being and practice self-care to support a healthy, balanced, and grounded presence while supporting children and families.

Team Collaboration & Qualified Practice

- Participate in regular staff meetings, planning sessions, and professional development opportunities.
- Provide support and coverage for other BBK team members as required.
- Fulfill assigned duties in a timely, respectful, and professional manner.
- Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to support programming and community needs.
