Position: Junior / Intermediate Environmental Scientist

Location: Southern Alberta (approx. 50% field work and 50% remote office work)

PIR-a Consulting Corp. is looking for a Junior / Intermediate Environmental Scientist to join our dynamic and growing team. This is a field and remote-based office position open to candidates across Western Canada, with a preference for individuals with experience or education relevant to Alberta environmental regulations and upstream oil and gas projects.

We work on a wide range of environmental site assessments, remediation programs, and regulatory submissions, with a strong focus on quality, efficiency, and innovation. Key Responsibilities

- Participate in field programs for Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), remediation programs, and site inspections, with support and direction from senior project staff as required.
- Coordinate with drillers, laboratories, subcontractors, and other vendors during field execution.
- Complete day-to-day field tasks safely and efficiently while meeting project quality, budget, schedule, and documentation expectations.
- Collect, document, and manage field data, including soil and groundwater samples, field screening results, photographs, GPS information, and daily site documentation.
- Provide clear and timely field updates to project managers and communicate professionally with clients, landowners, contractors, and other project stakeholders when required.
- Maintain high standards of data quality, sample integrity, chain of custody, and defensible field documentation.




- Review field data and laboratory analytical results for completeness and identify potential data gaps or follow-up requirements with support from senior technical staff.
- Support preparation of technical reports, figures, tables, regulatory submissions, and other project documentation.
- Work collaboratively with project managers, scientists, and technical staff to support efficient project delivery and learn progressively more complex technical tasks.
- Use cloud-based tools, field data collection applications, and project tracking systems for communication and document collaboration.
- Contribute to internal process improvements, templates, and operational efficiencies as experience grows.

Qualifications

We’re looking for someone with a strong practical foundation, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work independently as experience develops. You ideally have

- A degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geosciences, Biology, Reclamation, or related field.
- Approximately 1 to 5 years of hands-on environmental consulting, industry, or related field experience. Recent graduates with strong relevant field experience may also be considered.
- Working knowledge of, or a strong interest in learning, Alberta environmental regulations, guidelines, and upstream oil and gas closure requirements.
- Experience supporting environmental field programs such as Phase 2 ESAs, soil and groundwater sampling, remediation, reclamation, or site inspections is preferred.
- Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills, with the ability to follow work plans, coordinate field logistics, maintain accurate documentation, and manage changing priorities.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to data quality and defensibility.
- Comfort working remotely with autonomy and accountability.
- A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for field work. Bonus if you have:
- Professional designation, technician designation,



or eligibility for future registration (P.Ag., P.Geo., P.Biol., AScT, or similar).
- Experience with Phase 2 ESAs, remediation, reclamation, groundwater monitoring, or closure projects.
- Familiarity with AER, BCER, Alberta Tier 1/Tier 2 guidelines, or other applicable environmental guidance.
- Experience with GIS, GPS, field data collection applications, environmental database systems, or digital field documentation.
- Experience working around drilling equipment, coordinating field contractors, or completing upstream oil and gas field programs.
- Experience drafting technical reports and knowledge of the MS Office Suite.

- Full-time or versatile work structure depending on candidate preference and availability.
- Combination of field and office responsibilities.
- Can be structured as employee payroll or independent contractor, depending on candidate preference.
- Compensation starts at $27/hr and is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
