About Mission Critical EngineersMission Critical Engineers is a specialist independent Commissioning Authority for data centres and other high-availability infrastructure. We represent owners through the full commissioning lifecycle, providing rigorous technical oversight from design and construction verification through functional testing, integrated systems testing, and operational handover.
Our work addresses the complete critical infrastructure stack: electrical distribution, standby generation, UPS and battery systems, air and liquid cooling, BMS and controls, fire suppression, and life-safety systems. We are engaged where performance, redundancy, maintainability, and operational reliability must be demonstrated—not assumed.
The OpportunityMission Critical Engineers is seeking a Lead Commissioning Project Manager to lead the delivery of complex data centre commissioning projects, including high-density and mission-critical facilities.
This role is accountable for the day-to-day execution of commissioning programs, from planning and design review through construction verification, L1–L5 testing, integrated systems testing, and final handover. The Lead Commissioning Project Manager is the central point of coordination among owners, contractors, OEMs, consulting engineers, and the MCE commissioning team.
The successful candidate will manage technical delivery, schedule, test readiness, stakeholder communication, deficiency resolution, reporting, and project closeout while maintaining MCE’s independent owner-side role.
Responsibilities
- Lead the daily delivery of data centre commissioning projects from project initiation through final handover.
- Develop and manage commissioning plans, schedules, test matrices, milestones, resource plans, risk registers, and project controls.
- Lead and coordinate L1–L5 commissioning activities,
including factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, pre-functional testing, functional performance testing, and integrated systems testing.
- Coordinate electrical and mechanical commissioning scopes, including power distribution, generators, UPS systems, battery systems, cooling infrastructure, controls, BMS/EPMS, fire suppression, and life-safety systems.
- Chair project, commissioning, test-readiness, and testing meetings; document decisions, actions, risks, deficiencies, and accountabilities.
- Serve as the principal liaison among owners, general contractors, trade contractors, OEMs, consulting engineers, and MCE technical personnel.
- Review design documents, construction submittals, RFIs, equipment selections, change requests, sequences of operation, and test procedures for commissioning impact.
- Confirm that systems are installed, tested, and documented in accordance with the Owner’s Project Requirements, Basis of Design, contract documents, specifications, and intended redundancy strategy.
- Coordinate site access, safety controls, equipment availability, temporary loads, OEM attendance, and test-day logistics.
- Maintain and drive closure of commissioning deficiencies, test exceptions, and open issues.
- Prepare client-facing reports covering project status, commissioning progress, test outcomes, deficiencies, risks, and closeout requirements.
- Support owner training, operational turnover, warranty documentation, and the transition to the facility operations team.
- Identify single points of failure, maintainability constraints, control issues,
and gaps between design intent and demonstrated performance.
- Mentor project team members and contribute to the ongoing development of MCE commissioning standards and processes.
- Travel to client and project sites across Canada, as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Significant project management and commissioning experience within data centre, mission-critical, industrial, healthcare, utility, or similarly complex facilities.
- Demonstrated experience leading commissioning programs for high-availability infrastructure.
- Hands-on L1–L5 commissioning experience, including functional performance testing and integrated systems testing.
- Strong technical knowledge of critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
- Demonstrated ability to manage schedules, resources, stakeholder expectations, project risks, test programs, reporting, and closeout.
- Strong leadership presence and ability to lead technical meetings and testing activities under schedule-sensitive conditions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project-scheduling tools such as Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel 30–60% as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- P.Eng. designation or eligibility for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario.
- PMP, PMI-SP, CxA, BCxP, CCP, LEED AP, or comparable credential.
- Experience acting as an independent Commissioning Authority or owner’s representative.
- Experience with high-density, AI-ready, hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise data centres.
- Familiarity with N, N+1, 2N, distributed redundancy, concurrent maintainability, and critical-facility failure-mode testing.
- Experience with liquid cooling systems, agile load testing, and factory acceptance testing.
