Lead Full Stack Developer TypeScript · Node.js / NestJS · React / Next.js · Microsoft Azure
Full-time, permanent · Liberty Village, Toronto · 4 days in-office
Are you a senior full stack developer who is ready to lead projects and people, but not ready to give up the code?
Hour Consulting is hiring on behalf of our client, a Canadian-based technology consulting firm, for a Lead Full Stack Developer to own client development projects from first conversation through to production, and to lead the full stack developers who deliver them.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will still write code and make architecture decisions, but you will also set the technical direction on your projects, guide developers through design and code review, and be the person clients trust when the problem is hard and the path is not obvious. If you want real ownership, direct client exposure, and a team to grow, this is a role worth a conversation.

Our process
We know strong leads are usually talking to more than one company, so we keep this simple and fast:
- Intro call with Hour Consulting within a week of applying (30 minutes: the role, the client, your questions)
- Technical conversation with the client's engineering leadership
- One practical session : walk us through something you have built and how you would approach a real project of theirs
- Decision made
No take-home assignments, no six-round loops. If we are not the right fit for each other, we will tell you quickly and directly.
About our client
Our client is a Canadian-based software engineering and technology consulting firm that helps mid to large enterprises modernize their digital ecosystems through contemporary architectures, cloud platforms, and API-driven integrations. They build innovative, scalable, and secure solutions for clients who depend on them, and they have a strong track record of delivery.
They are a Great Place to Work® Certified company, and they take that seriously: it is an environment where people are supported, challenged, and valued, and where engineers are expected to think, not just execute. AI-assisted development is part of how they build, and they are looking for a lead who can show the team how to use it well.
What you will do
Lead projects and people
- Lead development projects end to end: scoping, solution design, delivery planning, build, and go-live
- Lead and mentor a team of full stack developers: set direction, unblock, review code, and raise the bar
- Own the technical decisions and architecture on your projects, and be accountable for what ships
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for client stakeholders
- Translate complex client challenges into clear, well-designed technical solutions
- Manage delivery risk: surface issues early, make trade-offs visible, and keep projects on track
- Establish and uphold engineering standards across code quality, testing, documentation, and deployment
Stay hands-on
- Design and build scalable full stack applications using TypeScript, Node.js, NestJS, React, and Next.js
- Architect, deploy, and operate solutions on Microsoft Azure
- Work with SQL and NoSQL databases, including data modelling and performance
- Prototype, build critical-path features, and lead by example
Bring AI into how the team builds
- Champion AI-assisted development (Copilot, Claude, etc.) across your team and set practical standards for using it well
- Apply AI for research, prototyping, and technical decision-making
- Design and build AI-powered features and integrations (LLMs, APIs, automation)
- Apply Context Engineering to structure prompts, data, and workflows effectively
- Shape AI-driven solution strategies for client products
What you bring
- 6 to 10 years of professional software development experience, including experience leading developers or owning technical delivery
- Strong full stack expertise with TypeScript
- Backend expertise with Node.js and NestJS (or similar)
- Strong frontend experience with React and Next.js
- Solid experience with SQL and NoSQL databases
- Hands-on experience designing and deploying on Microsoft Azure
- Experience with Docker / Dev Containers
- Proven track record leading Agile delivery (Jira)
- Excellent communication skills: you can explain technical decisions to clients and executives, and give developers clear, constructive feedback
- Comfortable owning the technical side of the client relationship
- Experience with, or strong openness to, AI-assisted development tools
Nice to have
- Experience with data migration on large enterprise projects (legacy platform migrations, large-scale data moves, cutover planning)
- Strong University-level education in Computer Science, Software Engineering,
or a related field
- Experience in a consulting, agency, or client-services environment
- Experience collaborating with distributed or offshore development teams
- Hands-on experience building AI or LLM-driven features
- Understanding of prompt design / Context Engineering
- Exposure to Azure AI, OpenAI APIs, or similar
- Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Developer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect)
- Personal projects, technical hobbies, or open-source contributions that show curiosity beyond assigned work
The kind of lead who will thrive here
You do not need to have all the answers. But you do need a high bar for thinking, building, and bringing others along with you.
You care about why something should be built, not just how. You challenge assumptions, push for better approaches, and take pride in what your team ships, not only in what you ship yourself.
You will thrive here if you:
- Still love getting into the code and going deep to understand how things really work
- Use tools, including AI, to think sharper, validate ideas faster, and hold your team's work to a higher standard
- Think critically and push back on requirements when the client's interests call for it
- Are comfortable leading through ambiguity, not just managing well-defined tickets
- Take ownership of outcomes and move work forward without waiting to be asked
- Grow the people around you: you make developers better through review, mentoring, and example
- Are curious about AI, modern workflows, and evolving development practices, and bring that curiosity to the team
- Understand that context matters, in systems, in inputs, and in the decisions you make for clients
- Care about clean, maintainable code, and hold your team to the same standard
- Are comfortable in a Mac/Unix-based environment
Why you will want this one
- Real ownership: you lead projects end to end, not a slice of a backlog
- Direct client exposure: you shape solutions with the people who will use them, not through layers of hand-offs
- A team to grow: you lead full stack developers and have a direct hand in how they develop
- A modern stack and an AI-forward engineering culture, at a firm that has been certified as a great place to work
- A permanent role with a collaborative Liberty Village office, four days a week in person with a team that builds together
