As our organization evolves, we are seeking a skilled and safety-focused M-U Electrical Technician to join our growing field operations team.

The Role The M-U Electrical Technician is responsible for the safe and accurate installation, splicing, and termination of underground utility-owned electrical service entrance cables, as well as the installation of underground telecommunication and CATV cables, pedestals, and associated utility-owned equipment. Work is performed under the authority of a Manitoba Hydro Underground (M-U) License and in compliance with regulatory, utility owner, and company standards.

The ideal candidate brings solid technical expertise, a commitment to safety excellence, and the ability to work efficiently in dynamic field environments.

Key Responsibilities:

Underground Cable Installation & Termination

- Install underground utility-owned electrical service entrance cables in accordance with Manitoba Hydro specifications and project requirements, and within the scope of the M-U License.
- Splice and terminate electrical service entrance cables in residential meter sockets
- Install underground telecommunication and CATV cables and associated pedestals to utility, client,



and company standards.
- Place utility-owned equipment associated with underground cable installations, without terminating cables in that equipment.

Quality Control & Testing
- Inspect cable splices and terminations for proper connection, alignment, and insulation integrity.
- Perform continuity checks and other required verification steps in accordance with regulatory and utility owner requirements.
- Accurately complete installation logs, test records, daily field reports, and as-built documentation to meet client, regulatory, and internal QA/QC standards.

Safety & Compliance
- Adhere strictly to company safety programs, utility owner requirements, and provincial and federal regulations.
- Participate in job hazard assessments (JHAs), tailgate meetings, and multi-utility coordination briefings.
- Maintain situational awareness when working near live gas, electrical, fiber, and water infrastructure.
- Immediately report and mitigate hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
- Operate strictly within the permissions and restrictions of the M-U License at all times.

Cross-Utility Coordination & Field Support
- Work collaboratively with gas, telecom, power, and civil crews to maintain safe clearances and sequencing of work.
- Communicate effectively with Supervisors, inspectors, Manitoba Hydro personnel, and management teams.

Equipment, Fleet & Asset Care
- Operate, inspect, and maintain cable-pulling, splicing,



and testing equipment.
- Ensure equipment is calibrated, compliant, and job-ready at all times.
- Maintain company vehicles, tools, and job site assets in accordance with company policies.

What you Bring

- Valid Manitoba Hydro Underground (M-U) License.
- Red Seal Power Electrician or Electrician with industrial experience is an asset
- 2–5 years of experience in underground utility installation and construction.
- Experience working with electrical, telecommunication, and CATV underground infrastructure is a strong asset.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and work orders.
- Proficient with cable installation, splicing, and testing equipment, and performing required inspection checks to ensure standards are met.
- Strong safety awareness, risk management mindset, and comfort working around energized infrastructure.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a crew in fast-paced field environments.
- Strong attention to detail, commitment to quality workmanship, and high personal integrity.
- Effective communication, teamwork skills, and a professional, mature demeanor under pressure.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clear driving abstract a must.
- Willing and able to travel out of town, including weekdays and occasional weekends.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and handle heavy materials and equipment.
- Comfortable working in excavations, confined spaces, and active construction zones.
