Insight Global is looking to bring on a Mechanical/ Manufacturing Engineering Technologist to support waterfront engineering activities for a large shipbuilding company located in Victoria, BC. The successful candidate will provide engineering support for structural assessment, repair specifications, configuration changes, weight management, and commissioning activities while working closely with engineering, production, project management, and customer teams.

Key Responsibilities

Perform structural analysis and assessment of existing submarine structures and provide engineering input for structural repairs, including steel structures, castings, penetrations, and other hull components.

Develop structural repair specifications using best-practice ship repair methodologies and support configuration change packages, implementation, and as-fitted drawings.

Manage weight documentation for Victoria Class Submarines and provide engineering support during commissioning and other maintenance activities.

Work collaboratively with Waterfront Engineering, Project Management, Drawing Office, Production, Commissioning, and On-Site Management teams, while interfacing with customers, regulatory bodies, and customer design authorities.

Apply knowledge of structural materials and mechanical components, including steels, castings, hard-wearing steels, surface finishes/roughness, ring gauges, and structural items.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

- 2+ years of experience working within mechanical and machining environments

Machining tolerances — how exact a dimension needs to be.



For example, a shaft might need to be manufactured to 50.00 ± 0.02 mm.

Surface finishes — how smooth or rough a machined surface needs to be, and how that affects the function of the part.

Materials — understanding that different metals/materials machine differently and may require different finishing processes.

Mechanical details/drawings — interpreting dimensions, tolerances, finishes, fits, and other manufacturing requirements.

Machining processes — understanding milling, turning, grinding, drilling, boring, etc., and what each process can achieve.

Fit/assembly requirements — understanding how components such as shafts, rings, bearings, seals, or other mechanical parts need to fit together.

Quality/inspection — potentially checking whether machined parts meet the drawing/specification

- Strong mechanical background in working with structural components, castings, ring gauges, structural refits
- Understanding of first level systems
- Mechanical interfaces – how equipment, piping, structures, and systems connect and interact
- System-level troubleshooting – assessing existing equipment or systems, identifying issues, and supporting repairs or modifications

Understanding of mechanical and structural components, materials, dimensional requirements, and inspection practices

Pay rate: $35-45/hr
