OPERATIONS SPECIALIST

Summary
The Operations/Project Specialist will report to the Area Manager and be based full-time at Catapult’s Portage la Prairie, Manitoba facility. This hands-on role will support the Facility Manager with daily operations, equipment operation, process improvements, and site projects, while taking on additional operational leadership responsibilities as required. Strong loader operating experience is required, compost experience is preferred, and a Class 1 licence is considered an asset.
Responsibilities
- Support safe, efficient, and compliant day-to-day facility operations.
- Work closely with the Facility Manager on operational planning, prioritization, and issue resolution.
- Operate heavy equipment, including loaders, screeners, turners, skid-steers, and other site equipment as required.
- Support compost processing activities including receiving, turning,
screening.
- Monitor site conditions, production flow, equipment utilization, and process performance.
- Identify and implement practical improvements to facility processes, workflow, equipment use, and productivity.
- Support equipment readiness, preventive maintenance, repairs, and vendor or contractor coordination.
- Provide operational support and decision-making coverage during the Facility Manager’s absence, as assigned.
- Support operational and facility improvement projects, including scope, schedule, budget, and execution where applicable.
- Maintain accurate operational records, reports, inspections, and incident documentation.
- Support compliance with workplace safety requirements, environmental approvals, operating procedures, and corporate policies.
- Assist with consumables tracking, operational budgeting, purchasing requirements, and cost-saving opportunities.
- Support and provide direction to facility personnel where required.
- Perform other duties as assigned and uphold Catapult’s Core Values.
Qualifications
Technical
- Minimum five years of experience in composting, waste management, industrial operations, heavy equipment operation, or a related field.
- Strong loader operating experience is required.
- Experience with screeners, turners, skid-steers, excavators, or similar equipment is an asset.
- Composting or organics processing experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting facility operations, troubleshooting, process improvement, or operational projects.
- Strong understanding of protected work practices and industrial or environmental compliance requirements.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and practical decision-making skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and communicate operational information clearly.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and reporting tools.

- Hands-on, dependable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.
- Practical, solutions-focused, and able to take initiative.
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability.
- Able to work effectively with operators, contractors, vendors, and management.
Requirements
- Legally authorized to work in Canada.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Class 1 driver’s licence preferred.
- Ability and willingness to regularly operate heavy equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong adherence to Catapult safety policies and procedures.
- Must complete and pass required pre-employment screening, including criminal record check and drug and alcohol testing.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.
