FOCAS Canada Community Learning Program | Preschool Ages 4–6

Position Overview

FOCAS Canada is seeking an enthusiastic and caring Play-Based Learning Facilitator to work with children ages 4 - 6. The facilitator will create a welcoming, inclusive environment where children learn through play, stories, songs, movement, creative activities, and hands-on exploration.

The Community Learning Program is culturally inclusive and guided by strengths such as storytelling, shared responsibility, multilingual learning, respect, and strong family and community relationships.

Position Details

- Wage: $16.00 per hour
- Hours: 4 hours per week
- Additional Hours: 15 hours (3 five-hour event days)
- Program Length: 9 weeks
- Start Date: September 25
- End Date: November 29
- Training: 4 hours of paid training

Key Responsibilities The facilitator will:

- Plan and lead engaging, age-appropriate play-based learning activities for children ages 4–6.
- Use stories, songs, games, dramatic play, art, movement, building, and hands-on activities to support learning.
- Help children develop confidence, belonging, sharing, turn-taking, helpfulness, cooperation, and basic self-care skills.
- Support early language and literacy through read-alouds, rhyming games, songs, picture sequencing, shared storytelling, and early writing activities.
- Introduce early math naturally through play, including counting, sorting, patterns, shapes, comparing, sharing, and simple measurement.
- Encourage kindness, respectful behaviour, taking turns, including others in play, and asking adults for help when needed.
- Create an workplace where children from different cultures, languages,



and family backgrounds feel welcomed and represented.
- Prepare materials, set up activities, supervise children, and help with clean-up.
- Communicate with the Program Coordinator about children's participation, needs, and any concerns.
- Work as a team to tidy or clean up the space used for the Community Learning Program

What We're Looking For The ideal candidate:

- Enjoys working with young children and understands that play is an important way children learn.
- Has the ability to work with a partner (co-leader) to facilitate activities
- Is warm, patient, energetic, dependable, and creative.
- Can manage a small group while keeping activities positive and engaging.
- Is comfortable using storytelling, games, art, music, movement, and imaginative play.
- Values cultural diversity and multilingual learning.
- Can model kindness, respect, cooperation, and positive behaviour.
- Has experience working with children through employment, volunteering, childcare, recreation, tutoring, camps, or community programs. Experience is an asset.

Our Approach The curriculum emphasizes play-based and experiential learning, along with oral traditions such as stories, proverbs, and riddles. For ages 4–6, activities can include cooperative building games, feelings puppets, helper activities, picture sorting, dramatic play, songs, storytelling, cultural activities, and hands-on exploration. The goal is simple: create a safe, fun, and welcoming space where young children can play, explore, build confidence, and learn together.

Pay: $16.00 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 4.0 per week
