Project Context The Senior Process Engineer will contribute to the design and development of modular systems (process skids) for nuclear applications. Projects include standalone systems such as filtration skids and vacuum drying systems for refurbishment or operational support. The work spans design, fabrication, and testing phases.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and detailed design engineering deliverables, including:
- Process design descriptions
- Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
- Heat and Mass Balance calculations
- Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs;)
- Equipment sizing and rating (e.g., distillation columns, pumps, recombiners, LPCE columns, heat exchangers, condensers, valves)
- Process specifications and control philosophies
- Review mechanical drawings and advise on manufacturability and performance.
- Develop layouts and guide 3D modeling of complex equipment or skids for fabrication.
- Apply working knowledge of applicable codes and standards for process equipment design (e.g., ASME/API).
- Contribute to or lead functional safety assessments (e.g., HAZOP, LOPA, FTA, FMEA).
- Collaborate with Mechanical and Electrical, Instrumentation & Control (EI&C;) teams to translate process design into manufacturable and testable solutions.
- Assist with procurement planning, inspections, scopes of work, and risk reviews, ensuring equipment meets specifications and project requirements.
- Lead or support proposal development, contract negotiations, cost estimation, scheduling, and resource planning.
- Develop process simulations using Aspen suite or custom unit-operation models (e.g., VB, Python, C#).
- Prepare detailed test procedures, including Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) documentation aligned with quality standards.
- Provide process engineering support during FAT and commissioning at customer sites.
- Support multiple concurrent projects and participate in site visits, domestically and internationally.
Candidate Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (Master’s or PhD preferred).
- 5 to 10 years of engineering experience in process plant environments.
- Process Engineering experience with gas systems.
- Experience working on multi-disciplinary projects.
- Experience leading projects.
- Nuclear industry experience.
- Qualified Engineer (P.Eng.) certification.
- Knowledge of ASME VIII or III standards.
- Experience with Solidworks or AutoCAD.
- Strong communication skills for collaborative engineering environments.

In accordance with our compensation practices, ALTEN is providing the salary range associated with this opportunity. Final compensation will be determined after considering several factors, including professional experience, skill set, educational background, certifications, and geographic market conditions. The current target bill rate for this role is $55–$85 per hour, depending on seniority.
