Overview
Step into the dynamic role of Relief Captain, where you will play a key leadership role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Barnston Island Ferry. As a Relief Captain, you will provide coverage as required, oversee day-to-day vessel operations, and work closely with the crew to maintain the highest standards of safety, customer service, and operational excellence.
The Barnston Island Ferry operates across Parsons Channel on the south side of the Fraser River, connecting Barnston Island on the north bank with Port Kells on the south bank. This unique ferry service provides an important connection for island residents, visitors, and local businesses.

More than just a transportation service, the ferry plays an essential role in connecting the community and supporting the people who live and work on the island.
Responsibilities
- Assume captaincy duties in the absence of the primary captain, ensuring continuous leadership and decision-making authority onboard
- Oversee vessel operations, and safety procedures, in compliance with maritime regulations and company policies
- Conduct safety drills, inspections,
and audits to uphold safety standards and ensure readiness for emergency situations
- Assist with troubleshooting mechanical issues to support vessel stability and operational efficiency
- Maintain accurate logs of vessel activities, safety reports, and operational records
Qualifications
- Valid certification as a licensed captain or equivalent maritime credential
- Demonstrated knowledge, mechanical troubleshooting, and safety protocols
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage crew members effectively under pressure
- Excellent communication skills to coordinate with team members and public
- A proactive mindset with keen attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
- MED A1/A2 Domestic Vessel Safety Certificate
- STCW Med(A1+B2)
- Master 60 ton with valid First aid Certificate with marine endorsement (Minimum)
