The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Safety Specialist to serve as a key resource in advancing health and safety initiatives within our manufacturing operations.
This position is ideal for someone who thrives in an operational environment, enjoys building relationships with employees and leaders, and is passionate about creating a strong safety culture. The successful candidate will partner closely with operations leadership and frontline employees to identify risks, improve safety performance, support compliance efforts, and drive continuous improvement initiatives across the site.
This role reports to the Director of Manufacturing and plays an important part in fostering an engaged, accountable, and safety-focused workplace.
What You’ll Do
Safety Culture & Program Development
- Champion a proactive safety culture and promote employee engagement in safety initiatives.
- Act as a trusted advisor and thought partner to leaders and employees on safety-related matters.
- Evaluate and improve health and safety policies, procedures, and programs.
- Conduct annual reviews of safety policies to ensure ongoing effectiveness and regulatory compliance.
- Support the development and implementation of safety initiatives that drive continuous improvement.
Incident Management & Investigations
- Lead and support incident and near-miss investigations using established investigation methodologies.
- Identify root causes and partner with operational leaders to develop effective corrective actions.
- Promote a culture of near-miss reporting and proactive hazard identification.
- Assist with regulatory investigations and reporting requirements as required.
- Support incident management and workers' compensation processes, including return-to-work activities where applicable.
- Utilize VelocityEHS and related systems to document and track incidents, corrective actions, and trends.
Training & Employee Development
- Develop, review, and enhance safety training materials, programs, and resources.
- Coordinate and facilitate employee safety training sessions.
- Maintain and audit training records to ensure compliance and completion.
- Monitor training effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Support employee onboarding activities related to health and safety.
Operational & Site Support
- Maintain a strong floor presence and actively engage with employees and supervisors.
- Participate in workplace inspections, audits, risk assessments, and safety committee activities.
- Support local safety meetings and drive accountability for safety action items.
- Assist in maintaining and improving safety documentation, manuals, procedures, and standards.
- Collaborate with operational teams to identify opportunities to improve workplace safety performance.
Metrics, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Track, analyze, and report proactive and reactive safety metrics.
- Develop weekly and monthly safety dashboards and KPI reporting.
- Monitor trends and provide recommendations to improve safety performance.
- Maintain safety records, documentation, and internal data repositories.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing risk and strengthening safety culture.
Compliance & Auditing
- Conduct audits and assessments to verify compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Support organizational safety audits and engagement assessments.
- Assist with SDS management and chemical safety program administration.
- Identify compliance gaps and partner with leaders to implement corrective actions.
- Maintain working knowledge of relevant provincial and federal safety regulations.
Qualifications
- 4-year degree or 2-year degree in a safety related (EHS) field from an accredited college or university, previous internship experience recommended.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Ability to set priorities and execute problem solving skills
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office tools
- Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analyses
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- 3-5+ years of Canadian Health & Safety experience within manufacturing, industrial, warehousing, logistics, distribution, construction, or other operational environments
- Experience participating in workplace inspections, audits, and compliance activities

In adherence to the principle of pay transparency, we are pleased to disclose the base pay for this full time position at Metrie. The base pay range for this role is set at 65,000−72,000. It is important to note that this position may also qualify for discretionary bonuses or commission payments. The specific base pay within the range will be contingent upon an individual's skills, qualifications, experience, and geographical location. Furthermore, it is essential to highlight that our remuneration ranges are established based on the role, level, and location.
