Role Description

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Senior Communications Specialist is responsible for supports the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society's social media program, communications planning, and written content strategy. This role leads the project management of provincial communications and marketing campaigns while acting as a key writer and editor for the organization. This is an exciting chance for an individual who is passionate about communications, storytelling, and making a meaningful impact within an industry committed to animal welfare.

Social Media and Communications

Develop and execute provincial social media strategies, content calendars, campaigns, contests, and influencer partnerships.

- Manage provincial social media accounts and support animal centres and clinics with social media initiatives, training, and troubleshooting.
- Monitor, analyze, and report on social media performance and campaign impact.
- Write and edit media releases, blogs, eblasts, newsletters, website content, and other communications.
- Manage monthly digital newsletters and blog content for the provincial office and animal centres.
- Develop and share impact stories across communications channels and support media relations activities.





Project and Campaign Management

- Manage communications and marketing projects, including corporate partnerships, timelines, deliverables, and freelance writers.
- Develop campaign tracking tools, including UTMs, and analyze results to inform future strategies.
- Provide recommendations to grow newsletter and email subscriber lists.
- Collaborate with internal departments, stakeholders, sponsors, media, partners, donors, volunteers, and community organizations.

- Ability to manage multiple priorities, tight deadlines, and high-volume workloads.
- Strong interpersonal, conflict-resolution, presentation, and relationship-management skills.
- Creative, self-motivated, adaptable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently and collaboratively.
- Flexible to support occasional evening and weekend activities.

Qualifications

- Ability to demonstrate strong Communication skills, including clear, audience-focused messaging across multiple channels.
- Experience in writing and managing Press Releases, media advisories, and related media materials.
- Proficiency in Strategic Communications, including planning, executing, and evaluating communication strategies that support organizational goals.
- Advanced Writing skills for a range of formats (web, social media, print, speeches) with attention to accuracy, clarity, and tone.
- Experience with Internal Communications, including staff updates, intranet content, and organizational announcements.
- Post-secondary education in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Strong project management, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Comfort working in a hybrid environment, collaborating in-person in Midland, ON and remotely as required.
- Experience in the non-profit, charity, or animal welfare sector is an asset, along with an interest in animal well-being and advocacy.
