Responsible to the foreman regarding tooling, shop supplies, damaged tools, cleaning, and autocrib operations in the facility. Works with all shop employees for tooling and general labour duties. Works with office manager when checking and verifying products and goods picked up from suppliers.
Reports to the plant supervisor regarding Tooling, shop supplies, inventory quantities and all duties.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Issue and receive cutting tools, toolholders, inserts, measuring equipment, and shop supplies.
- Monitor inventory levels and notify the appropriate personnel when tooling or supplies require replenishment.
- Organize and maintain the tool crib so that tooling and supplies are clearly identified and easily accessible.
- Assemble cutting tools and toolholder assemblies according to job requirements.
- Operate a tool presetter to accurately measure and set tool length, diameter, and offset information.
- Enter or transfer preset tool data as required for CNC machine setup.
- Verify that preset tools match the tooling requirements specified on setup sheets and job documentation.
- Inspect returned tools and equipment for wear, damage, or missing components.
- Coordinate the sharpening, repair, or replacement of worn and damaged cutting tools.
- Remove damaged, defective, or unsuitable tooling from service.
- Track high-value tooling and report missing, damaged, or prematurely worn items.
- Review upcoming jobs and help ensure the required tooling is available before production begins.
- Work with machinists and supervisors to identify standard tooling and reduce unnecessary tooling costs.
- Keep the tool crib and tool-presetting area clean, organized, and compliant with workplace safety requirements.
- Follow all CMI Heavy Industries health and safety policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a tool crib, machine shop, manufacturing facility, workplace is preferred.
- Familiarity with CNC machining tools, carbide inserts, drills, end mills, boring tools, toolholders, and measuring equipment is considered an asset.
- Previous experience operating a tool presetter is preferred.
- Ability to read tooling descriptions, part numbers, setup sheets, and basic technical documentation.
- Basic understanding of tool offsets and CNC machining principles is considered an asset.
- Basic understanding of measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and indicators is considered an asset.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple requests and prioritize production requirements.
- Ability to work independently while supporting a team-based manufacturing environment.
- Valid forklift or overhead-crane certification is considered an asset.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lb.
- Ability to safely handle sharp cutting tools, tooling assemblies, and industrial supplies.
- Ability to work in an active heavy-manufacturing environment.
