JOB OVERVIEW The Visitor Experience & Collections Coordinator at the Canmore Museum is responsible for supporting a welcoming and engaging visitor experience while contributing to the care, research, and documentation of the Museum’s collections. This role includes carrying out front desk operations, delivering excellent customer service, supporting the museum gift shop, conducting collections research, using collections management software, and working with volunteers on collections-based projects.
The Visitor
Experience & Collections Coordinator also supports museum exhibitions, programs, events, and interpretive initiatives as required. The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic communicator with an interest in local history, museum collections, research, and visitor engagement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
VISITOR SERVICES
- Serve as the first point of contact for visitors, providing a warm and welcoming experience.
- Process admissions, memberships, and program registrations.
- Provide information about museum exhibits, programs, and events.
- Handle visitor inquiries and feedback, ensuring a positive guest experience.
- Maintain membership records and process membership purchases and renewals.
COLLECTIONS
- Ensures all artworks, objects, artifacts and belongings within the museum’s collections are cared for and handled according to legal requirements and qualified standards.
- Responsible for preventive collection maintenance, this includes ensuring appropriate standards of storage are in place, monitoring environmental factors, and security and risk management.
- Conducts research on the history of the Canmore NWMP Barracks, associated collections, and related community stories.
- Responsible for ensuring collections records are kept up to date in PastPerfect, and conform with museum standards for data management.
- Works with the team to produce interpretive content for the museum’s mobile app to improve remote access and engagement.
- Retrieves and prepares objects and archival information, conducts object and archival research for the staff members and public.
- Works with and supports volunteers on projects related to the Museum’s collections, including research, documentation, cataloguing, and other collections-based initiatives.
- Responds to research requests for Archives and Collections and also is responsible for selling reproductions etc.
- Work may require some lifting (up to 30lbs) and may sometimes be in dusty or dirty environments.
CURATION
- Assist with the research, development, and delivery of exhibitions and interpretive displays when needed.
- Translate complex and layered histories into accessible and engaging narratives that reflect multiple perspectives and encourage critical thinking.
- Assist with the development and updating of exhibition labels, interpretive materials, digital content, and other visitor-facing resources.
- Ensure interpretive and curatorial content is historically accurate, accessible, engaging, and consistent with the Museum’s mission and values.
ADMINISTRATION
- Provide phone reception for the Museum’s visitor services phone line.
- Respond to general inbox emails and inquiries, including research requests.
- Assist with programming, events, and exhibitions as required.
- Assist with retail as required
- Assist with daily front of house museum operations and administration, including processing paperwork, conducting research, maintaining records and statistics.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The Visitor Experience & Collections Coordinator is part of the core team who oversee the functions of museum practice and operations at the Canmore Museum. We are dedicated to building a workforce that reflects the diversity of the public and the communities in which we live and serve. JOB QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will have:
- Post-secondary education in history, heritage/museum studies, conservation, arts or or other related field (or equivalent)
- Experience in heritage interpretation, cultural programming, digital storytelling, theatre/performing arts, and story-telling
- Excellent communication and time management skills
- Ability to maintain healthy working relationships
- Experience working with digital content creation, curation is an asset
- Knowledge of PastPerfect or other collections management software is an asset
- Computer skills including POS systems (Square preferred), and Google Workspace
- Knowledge of and enthusiasm about the history and community of Canmore and the Bow Valley
EMPLOYMENT DETAILS Position Type: Full-Time, Temporary
Hours: 37.5 hours per week; flexible schedule with some evening and weekend work required
Location: Based at the Canmore Museum and NWMP Barracks, with work at off-site collections location in Canmore
Reports to: Operations Manager
This is a fixed-term position running from September 23, 2026, to May 2, 2027
Pay: $22.00 per hour
Expected hours: 37.5 per week
