Wage: OPSEU Local 266 Collective Agreement – Public Works Level 1

The Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula is seeking a reliable, safety-focused and customer-service-oriented individual to join our Public Works team as a Waste Management Operator.

The Waste Management Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient collection and transportation of residential, commercial and municipal waste throughout the Municipality. This position operates municipal waste collection vehicles and related equipment, completes assigned collection routes, performs daily vehicle inspections, maintains accurate records and provides professional service to residents and customers.

What You’ll Do

As a Waste Management Operator, you will:

- Operate municipal waste collection vehicles and related equipment safely and efficiently.
- Complete assigned residential, commercial, institutional and municipal collection routes.
- Collect garbage and other approved waste materials in accordance with municipal programs and procedures.
- Transport collected materials to approved landfill, transfer, recycling or processing facilities.
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle and equipment inspections.
- Operate hydraulic systems, lifting mechanisms, compactors, cart tippers and other collection equipment.
- Identify and document improperly prepared, contaminated, prohibited or non-compliant waste materials.
- Use route-management systems, GPS, tablets, radios and other onboard technology.
- Maintain accurate route, inspection, fuel, mileage, vehicle and collection records.
- Communicate delays, missed collections,



unsafe conditions and equipment concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
- Provide courteous and professional service to residents, businesses, visitors and municipal staff.
- Follow all applicable health and safety, environmental and municipal operating requirements.
- Assist with other Public Works and municipal operations when required.

What You Bring The successful candidate will have:
- A valid Ontario Class DZ driver’s licence in good standing.
- A satisfactory driver’s abstract acceptable to the Municipality.
- An Ontario Secondary School Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous experience operating commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, waste collection vehicles or similar equipment.
- Strong safety awareness and sound judgement.
- Valuable communication and customer-service skills.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic ability to use tablets, GPS systems, mobile devices and other workplace technology.
- The ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position.

Experience in waste management, Public Works, transportation, construction, environmental services or municipal operations is considered an asset. First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and other applicable training are assets.



Successful candidates must be willing to obtain required training as directed by the Municipality.

Working Conditions

This is an active, outdoor position performed in a variety of weather and road conditions. Employees may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, snow, dust, noise, traffic, odours, waste materials and moving equipment.

The position requires frequent entry and exit from vehicles and may involve standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling and lifting materials or equipment weighing up to approximately 23 kg / 50 lbs.

Work schedules may include early mornings, weekends, holidays, overtime, emergency call-ins and adjusted hours depending on operational requirements.
