Job Description

The Captain – Ferry, is responsible for the safe, efficient, and professional operation of a passenger ferry vessel. Capable of commanding a vessel carrying passengers, crew and cargo while ensuring compliance with all applicable marine regulations, safety standards and company policies.

Responsibilities

- Maintains a healthy and safe work environment, ensuring the safe operation of the vessel, ensuring the safety of all personnel and the safe carriage of cargo, in accordance with Transport Canada.
- Prepare voyage plans and maintain records of the vessel's activities.




- Ensure the vessel is navigated safely and in accordance with the maritime requirements.
- Adhering to local and international maritime laws and regulations.
- Conduct pre-departure, underway, and post-voyage inspections of the vessel.
- Maintain protected vessel handling during docking, undocking, and transit operations.
- Monitor weather, tide, current, and navigational conditions to ensure safe operations.
- Ensure adherence to scheduled routes and departure times while prioritizing passenger safety.
- Conduct emergency drills and ensure crew readiness for emergency situations.
- Ensure lifesaving, firefighting and safety equipment are inspected and maintained.
- Investigate and report incidents, accidents and safety concerns.
- Supervise, direct, and support deckhands and other vessel crew members.
- Assign duties and ensure crew performance meets operational and safety standards.
- Provide coaching, training and mentoring to crew members.
- Provide a professional and courteous experience for passengers.
- Address passenger inquiries, concerns and complaints in a calm and professional manner.
- Ensure passenger boarding and disembarkation procedures are conducted safely.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

- Mandatory possession of a valid Transport Canada Master 60 Gross Tonnage (GT) Limited Certificate.
- Valid Marine Medical Certificate.




- Marine Emergency Duties (MED) certification as required by regulation.
- Restricted Operator Certificate – Maritime (ROC‑M).
- Strong knowledge of Canadian marine regulations, navigation, and vessel operations.
- Demonstrated leadership and decision‑making skills.
- Excellent communication and customer service abilities.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and varying shifts.
- Marine First Aid/CPR certification.
- Experience with vessel maintenance and safety management services.
- 2-3 years of previous experience working as a vessel operator.
- Strong organization and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision.
- Problem solving and troubleshooting knowledge.
- Ability to manage and facilitate numerous projects simultaneously.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Self‑motivated, self‑dedicated, and results oriented.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and navigate vessel decks safely.
- Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies up to 50lbs.
- Ability to respond effectively during emergency situations.
