This is an excellent opportunity to practice broad-scope maternity care within a supportive, team-based environment serving a diverse regional population.Locum opportunities are available throughout the year, with flexible scheduling and the opportunity to tailor your practice based on your interests, including clinic, on-call coverage, or a combination of both. Care is delivered through a combination of structured prenatal clinics and a shared labour and delivery call group.We value open communication, shared learning, and mutual support, with a strong emphasis on safe, team based decision making.Team & Support IncludesA collegial group of family physicians and midwives who routinely consult, debrief,
and problem solve togetherExperienced and dedicated maternity nursing staffCesarean section backup from Obstetrician Gynecologists and OSS/ESS trained physiciansPediatricians providing regular on call supportAnesthesia on call for epidural servicesRespiratory therapists available 24/7 for NRP and birth supportWho We Care ForPatients referred by community family physicians (often after ~24 weeks' gestation)Attached and unattached prenatal patients and post-partum dyadsIndividuals from a large geographic catchment across northwest British ColumbiaA mix of low risk pregnancies and patients with increased medical, social, or geographic complexityHow The Service WorksLow Risk & General Prenatal ClinicDedicated maternity nursing team conducts initial prenatal history appointmentsWeekly prenatal clinic runs Thursdays, typically staffed by two physicians plus learners (we are a UBC ICC site and support a local UBC rural residency program)Physicians who participate in the call group also rotate through prenatal clinic sessionsClinic work is paid at a set hourly sessional rate with no overhead through the Coast Mountain Primary Care NetworkHigher Risk Prenatal ClinicA separate prenatal clinic provides care for pregnancies deemed higher riskPatients are followed longitudinally by specific designated providers, allowing for continuity and advanced care planningThis clinic works closely with the broader maternity and obstetrical team to support safe intrapartum careLabour & Delivery / Hospital Based CareA shared call group manages labours for both low and higher risk obstetrical patients24 hour call shifts; weekends typically run Friday 08:00 – Monday 08:00Intrapartum care is supported by:Obstetrician GynecologistsExperienced obstetrical family physicians and midwivesDedicated maternity nursing staffProviders attend cesarean sections as surgical assistsLocal community physicians with longitudinal family practices bill through LFP or fee for service, depending on their clinic modelPostpartum CarePostpartum clinic care is available for patients without a primary care providerFollow up is typically to 6 weeks postpartum, with extensions up to 6 months as clinically appropriateAdditional Opportunities (Optional)Women's Wellness Clinic (Tuesdays): contraception, cervical cancer screening, menopause care, and prioritized access for patients requiring pregnancy terminationOpportunities to connect with and work within:OAT clinicLow barrier care clinicEmergency DepartmentCommunity family medicine practicesFacilitiesNewly opened prenatal/postpartum clinic space featuring:On site NST machineOn site vaccination capacity (final approvals underway)A new hospital facility (opened November 2024) with:Spacious birthing and postpartum roomsModern obstetrical and surgical equipment
