Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT

The Ideas Lab Technician participates in and supports the day-to-day operation of the Ideas Lab ensuring equipment/tools, spaces, and software are maintained, supported, and are in place for safe and effective use. The technician provides orientation and demonstrations on applicable equipment, tools, and software located in the idea lab, and supports the development of physical and digital objects.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Acts as the first point of contact for the Ideas Lab; receives, monitors, and responds to a variety of inquiries, received from and responding by various methods;

Supports and participates in the day-to-day operation of the Ideas Lab;

Provides information to students and assistance on which tools and/or equipment to use to support, assist with achieving the students’ project goals;

Provides basic support and one-on-one demonstrations and in the use of related tools, software and equipment located in the Ideas Lab, which include but not limited to laser cutters, microelectronic technology, non-computerized tools, design and fabrication software;

Books and maintains the Ideas Lab space and equipment and other related student spaces in the Wilna Thomas Centre; schedules the space and equipment based on priority and availability;

Lends equipment in conjunction with established library equipment lending procedures, and liaises with appropriate library staff for applicable service delivery;

Assists in the planning, scheduling, and promotion of workshops in the Ideas Lab, assists in workshop presentations/demonstrations, when requested by supervisor;

Administers the related lab 3D printing service, includes basic software assistance and/or guidance on students’ projects, with 3D modelling tools, troubleshooting printer errors, basic printer maintenance, and maintaining supplies;

Creates and updates documentation, in conjunction with supervisor, on the use of hardware and software in the Ideas Lab;

Assists supervisor in promoting the Ideas Lab using various methods such as but not limited to social media, creating promotional materials, and end-user support/how to videos;





Updates and maintain content on the Ideas Lab website in conjunction with supervisor,

Assists in the research and evaluation, and makes recommendations, of equipment and software for the lab;

Ensures safety procedures and the code of conduct for the space are observed and adhered to and follows up with supervisor for appropriate additional guidance and direction;

Keeps the Ideas Lab and the equipment in clean and safe working order; performs minor equipment repairs; monitor supplies and maintains an inventory; submits appropriate supply requests;

Liaises with ITS , Print and Graphic Services, Finance, Communication and Marketing and other college departments as applicable such as but not limited to ordering supplies, promotional products, etc;

Performs other duties similar in scope and complexity.

Qualifications

Two-year technician diploma in an area such Library Technology or Computer Systems and three years of experience directly supporting technology in an education setting or Ideas Lab or fabrication setting.

Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, to work independently, to initiate and complete tasks with minimal direction, as well as participate as a team player and work in collaborative environment;

Excellent communication skills to deal effectively and professionally with students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, as well as with faculty and staff;

Proven organizational skills including attention to detail and accuracy, including time management and prioritization;

Ability to analyze complex and variable situational problems, apply critical thinking and judgment and conflict resolution techniques to resolve issues;

Knowledge of current digital fabrication tools including 3D Printers, related programming and coding, along with knowledge of design software used in fabrication and development of digital objects, and microelectronic technology;

Demonstrated ability to locate, read, understand, and synthesize technical information from a variety of sources to solve technical problems;

Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, and proficiency in record keeping and data entry;

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
