About the Role Glooscap Ventures is seeking a Staff Accountant to join the team at the Market at Kluskap Landing. This is a full-time, 1-year term, salaried position responsible for supporting the day-to-day financial and administrative operations of the seafood market. Working closely with Market Management and the Glooscap Ventures Finance team, the Staff Accountant will support accounts payable and receivable, invoice and expense processing, bank and credit card reconciliations, payroll documentation, financial record keeping, reporting, and month-end and year-end activities. The role will also provide support with audits, financial documentation, internal inquiries, and the maintenance of accurate and organized records in accordance with organizational policies and internal financial controls.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting Operations

Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, including invoices, payments, receipts, and supporting documentation.

Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, prepayments, corrections, and other adjusting entries.

Perform bank, credit card, cash, and general ledger reconciliations and investigate and resolve discrepancies.

Reconcile daily sales, point-of-sale transactions, deposits, and payment settlements to accounting records.

Support payroll-related accounting, reconciliations, and reporting as required.

Review financial transactions for accurate coding, appropriate authorization, and complete supporting documentation.

Support inventory accounting, including adjustments, spoilage, shrinkage, and reconciliation of inventory records.

Monitor sales, cost of goods sold, gross margins, expenses, and other key financial results.

Prepare account schedules and working papers and support month-end and year-end closing processes.

Prepare financial reports and summaries for Market Management and the Glooscap Ventures Finance team.

Assist with budget monitoring, variance analysis, and investigation of significant financial variances.

Financial Controls, Compliance & Audit

Support compliance with established purchasing, payment, expense, cash-handling, and financial approval procedures.

Assist with internal and external audits, financial reviews, and related information requests.

Maintain accurate and organized financial records in accordance with confidentiality, privacy, and records-retention requirements.

Identify accounting, control, or process weaknesses and recommend practical improvements.

Operational & General Support





Work with Market Management and the Finance team to address financial matters relating to sales, inventory, invoices, payments, deposits, and expenses.

Respond to internal financial inquiries and provide supporting accounting information as required.

Participate in staff meetings, training, and other organizational activities as required.

Perform other related accounting and financial duties as assigned by the Manager or supervisor.

Qualifications & Experience

Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Bookkeeping from a recognized institution

Minimum two years of progressive experience in bookkeeping or accounting support, preferably within a retail, sales-driven, or multi-revenue environment

Demonstrated proficiency with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, Intacct (Sage Intacct), or other modern accounting and financial management systems

Solid working knowledge of retail financial operations, including cash handling controls, daily sales reconciliation, and inventory-related accounting processes

Experience supporting payroll processing, accounts payable and receivable, and monthly bank reconciliations

Exceptional attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy and numerical competency

Proven ability to handle confidential financial and payroll information with discretion, integrity, and professionalism

Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Assets

Experience working in a public sector, Indigenous organization, or not-for-profit environment

Seafood market, food-based retail, or fresh-goods market experience

Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and daily cash handling

Working Conditions

Standard business hours, Monday to Friday (Friday’s Remote)

Regular interaction with management and staff.

Structured office environment requiring accuracy, professionalism, and discretion

Work Schedule:

37.5 hours per week, primarily Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Some flexibility required to meet operational demands.
