High School Teacher- 2026-2027 School Year

Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School is an independent, K-12 school and is one of a few designated inclusive education schools in BC, serving students not only from the North Shore but drawing students from across the Lower Mainland. We follow the BC Ministry of Education curriculum while adapting and differentiating instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners. We incorporate Inquiry and Experiential Learning, Universal Design for Learning, and social-emotional education to deliver a comprehensive educational experience.

Students in our high school are working towards the Dogwood Graduation certificate and engage in successive experiences focused on being ready to launch towards individualized pathways post-graduation.

Educators in high school teach 4 courses per semester, support school-wide experiences on Flex Fridays, and serve as advisor (case manager) to 5-6 students. The teacher will collaborate with the KGMS multi-disciplinary team to develop and facilitate IEP's that support student self-regulation and skill development, as well as front-load, reinforce and extend academic and social learning. The ideal candidate will be patient, empathetic, flexible, and possess a genuine passion for working with neurodiverse learners.

As a KGMS educator, the successful candidate will contribute to the warm and nurturing culture of the school and ensure that all students experience success and belonging within our community.

Position Details:

- Reporting to the Principal, High School
- Full time position for the 2026–2027 school year. Start date in September/October, by mutual agreement with the school and the successful candidate.
- Opportunities for ongoing employment may be available following the completion of the initial term.




- The teaching assignments will be determined based on the expertise of the successful candidate. We are particularly interested in specializations in secondary-school level English, Social Studies, and/or Visual Art (2D, 3D, woodworking).

Qualifications:

- Canadian residency and be legally entitled to work in Canada and a successful BC Vulnerable Sector / Criminal Record Check
- A valid BC teaching certificate or Independent School Certification qualifying criteria
- Experience, education, and/or training with diverse learners (especially ADHD, ASD, SLDs, mental health) and knowledge of student regulation and management strategies
- Experience, education, or training in inquiry-based learning pedagogies and universal design for learning strategies at the secondary-school level.
- Experience, education, and/or training in experiential learning, trauma-informed practices, intercultural competencies, coaching or other pastoral care modalities.
- Brings different perspectives, voices, and worldviews to the classroom learning experience, including those of Indigenous, local, and global populations
- Current knowledge and experiences with BC Ministry of Education curriculum, assessment, and reporting expectations.
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Superior skills in self-awareness, self-management and self-advocacy
- Fluent communication skills in English, both oral and written




- Strong organizational, communication, administrative and interpersonal skills
- Proficient knowledge of educational and assistive technologies and applications

Responsibilities:
- Uphold Professional Standards for BC Educators

- Planning, delivery, assessment and reporting for courses and programs aligned with approved BC and/or school curriculum as directed by the Principal

- Accommodate inclusive education needs of students, including behaviour plans and Individual Education Plans

- Support the development and tracking of Individual Education Plans as part of the collaborative school-based team

- Serve as an Inclusive Education Plan case manager for a group of students

- Regular communication with colleagues, students, and parents/guardians

- Participate in school life programs, including Support Block, Advisory, Outdoor School Days, Career Education, Social-Emotional Learning, etc.

- Utilize Google Classroom, Google Workspace, and MySchool platforms

- Other duties as required

Salary and benefits are paid as per the BCGEU collective agreement, depending on category and step..
