Salary Range: TFS has a salary grid for non-unionized employees, which is determined by the nature of the position and the candidate’s level of experience. For this position, the hourly salary range is: $34,01 - $36.62

About the Position

The Handyman is responsible for performing a variety of general maintenance, repair, and upkeep tasks across the TFS campus. Reporting to the Associate Director of Facility, the Handyman supports the safe, functional, and well-maintained condition of classrooms, offices, common areas, washrooms, outdoor spaces, and school facilities.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on, reliable, and service-oriented individual with strong general maintenance skills and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with members of the Facilities team.

1. Carpentry & General Repairs

- Assemble, repair, and install classroom furniture, including student desks, chairs, bookcases, and storage cabinets.
- Repair or replace door hardware, including hinges, knobs, closers, and kickplates.
- Install and repair window screens and blinds.
- Patch, sand, and paint damaged drywall.
- Repair or replace damaged ceiling tiles.
- Install and secure whiteboards, bulletin boards, TVs, and other fixtures.
- Repair or secure loose bathroom partitions and other building fixtures.

2. Plumbing & Restroom Maintenance

- Clear minor blockages in sinks and toilets.
- Repair or replace flush valves, flappers, and other minor plumbing components.
- Repair leaking faucets and replace cartridges as required.
- Secure loose sink hardware.
- Re-caulk sinks, toilets, water fountains, and other fixtures as required to maintain sanitary conditions.
- Replace water fountain filters and unclog drains as needed.

3. Electrical & Lighting

- Replace burnt-out fluorescent, LED, and incandescent bulbs throughout classrooms, hallways, offices, and other school areas.
- Replace cracked or damaged outlet and light switch covers.
- Assist with the minor installation, assembly, or relocation of breakroom appliances, including microwaves, refrigerators, and portable air-conditioning units.

4. Exterior & Grounds Maintenance

- Inspect playground equipment and perform minor tightening and repairs as required to support secure operation.
- Pressure wash exterior entryways and other designated areas.
- Clear debris from gutters and exterior areas.




- Assist with seasonal maintenance tasks, including assembling outdoor benches and other outdoor fixtures.
- Assist with clearing snow and ice from primary pedestrian walkways as required.
- Perform other general groundskeeping and maintenance tasks as assigned.

5. Health, Safety & Compliance

- Follow all applicable local, provincial, and national building, health, and safety regulations.
- Follow all TFS health and safety policies and procedures.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety equipment when performing maintenance tasks.
- Ensure work areas are safe, clean, and free of hazards before leaving the premises.
- Report safety concerns, significant damage, or maintenance issues requiring specialized expertise to the appropriate member of the Facilities team.
- Perform all duties in a manner that supports the safety and well-being of students, employees, and visitors.

6. Other Responsibilities

- Maintain accurate and organized records of completed maintenance and repair work, where required.
- Communicate effectively with Facilities staff, school employees, and external service providers.
- Assist with general Facilities projects and other maintenance tasks as required.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.

Scope and Limitations

The Handyman position is intended to cover routine and minor maintenance and repair work. The role does not include:

- Major structural renovations requiring architectural permits or structural engineering approval.
- High-voltage electrical work, including installation or modification of electrical panels or breaker boxes.
- Major plumbing work, including replacement of sewer mains, boilers, water heaters, or other major plumbing infrastructure.
- Extensive asbestos, mold, or other hazardous-material remediation.
- Any work requiring specialized licensing, certification, permits, or professional sign-off beyond the qualifications and scope of the position.

- High school diploma or GED.
- Building Operator Licence or other relevant trade licence is an asset.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a handyman, building maintenance, facilities maintenance, or similar role.




- Valid driver’s licence, clean driving record, and reliable transportation.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing and general building maintenance.
- Basic carpentry skills, including locating studs, building or assembling shelving, and installing cabinets.
- Comfortable using a variety of hand tools and power tools.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and accurately convert measurements.
- Ability to safely sit, stand, kneel, bend, lift, climb ladders, and perform physical maintenance tasks.
- Ability to lift and move furniture, equipment, and maintenance materials safely.
- Strong organizational, multitasking, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Positive attitude and strong work ethic.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; multilingual abilities are an asset.
- Friendly, approachable, and professional when interacting with students, employees, parents, and visitors.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace health and safety.
