The Central BC Railway & Forestry Museum (the Museum) is entering an exciting period of renewal, and this role is an opportunity to help shape how visitors first experience one of Northern British Columbia’s distinctive heritage attractions. If you enjoy meeting people, creating a welcoming atmosphere, and supporting community-focused programs and events, this position offers hands-on experience in visitor services, tourism, retail, events, and museum operations.
We are seeking a friendly, reliable, and service-oriented individual to join our team and help create welcoming, engaging, and memorable experiences for every visitor.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Executive Director or delegated Manager and working closely with Museum staff and volunteers, the Visitor Services Assistant is often the first person visitors meet when they arrive. This role supports front desk operations, admissions, gift shop sales, visitor inquiries, rentals, programs, and special events while helping create a positive and welcoming experience across the Museum site. The successful candidate will enjoy working with people, be comfortable learning new systems and routines, and bring a reliable, service-focused approach to visitors, volunteers, members, renters, and community partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome visitors and provide excellent customer service.
- Operate the front desk, admissions, gift shop, and point-of-sale systems.
- Provide information about Museum exhibits, attractions, programs, events, and services.
- Support visitor experience initiatives and help maintain a welcoming workplace throughout the site.
- Assist with visitor statistics collection and reporting.
- Support memberships, volunteer inquiries, and related administrative tasks.
- Assist with facility rentals, public programs, special events, and tours.
- Perform general clerical and administrative duties.
- Learn and assist with a variety of other Museum operations and projects as required.
- Support staff and volunteers in achieving organizational goals and providing exceptional service to the public.
- Support communications as needed or assigned.
This position may be a strong fit for someone with experience in customer service, hospitality, tourism, retail, recreation, culture, or community programming who is looking for meaningful work in a public-facing heritage setting.
Qualifications
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Strong communication and organizational abilities.
- Basic administrative and computer skills.
- Experience working with the public, retail, tourism, hospitality, recreation, cultural organizations, museums, or related fields is an asset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Interest in local history, heritage, tourism, museums, or community engagement is considered an asset.
- Positive attitude, flexibility, and willingness to learn.

Hours and Employment Opportunities
The Museum’s goal is to establish this as a full-time position. Depending on operational needs, the Museum may also consider temporary, seasonal, casual, part-time, or full-time arrangements to support visitor services. Fall and winter operations are currently Wednesday through Sunday. The successful candidate must be available to work varied days and times, including weekends, holidays, special events, and occasional evening shifts.
The wage rate is $21.50 to $25.00 per hour, based on experience and the final employment arrangement. Eligible employees may also receive extended health and dental benefits.
