Carpentry Trades Shop Technician – Term-Certain

Position Summary

The School of Trades and Technology is looking for a permanent Trades Shop Technician in the Carpentry program.

The Carpentry Technician will provide self-directed technical support for the day-to-day operations of the Carpentry Trade. The successful candidate must be able to troubleshoot, solve problems, and repair tools and equipment under tight timelines. He or she will be required to support students and instructors in the School of Trades and Technology through the procurement of materials, supplies, and equipment as well as the installation, testing, and calibration of equipment. This position will also support related activities throughout the School of Trades and Technology when required. This position is a permanent position and is required 5 days per week (35 hours).

Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Carpentry Shop Technician include:

- Designs, prototypes, tests, modifies and delivers a wide range of custom-made projects to meet unique specifications.
- Cuts student materials, stores and distributes materials as required.
- Procures materials and tools as required.
- Receives supplies of materials and other goods and arranges for proper storage.
- Sets up and disassembles a variety of equipment and complex mock-ups.
- Troubleshoots equipment and tool issues under tight timelines.




- Conducts regular maintenance and repairs of the Shop facilities and equipment.
- Consults, researches, designs and fabricates and/or modifies equipment as requested by the Technical Services Manager and Instructors.
- Redesigns present lab equipment to meet changing needs of the learner.
- Keeps current with Safety regulations & communicates expectations and changes to colleagues, instructors, and students
- Maintains the safety policy with all the Trades Shop/Lab facilities.
- Checks and maintains safety equipment.
- Explains and enforces Safety procedures to individuals using the Shop/Lab facilities. Disposes of hazardous waste in storage areas using proper procedures.
- Supports maintaining SDS inventory and WHMIS records.
- Purchases and maintains accurate inventories of consumables, materials and equipment for the department.
- Participates in decision making for capital purchases, researches alternatives, completes a cost- benefit analysis of technical features and makes recommendations for purchases.
- Distributes Shop equipment and materials as needed and arranges for shipment of materials as required.
- Communicates safe & proper usage of equipment and tools to the departments.
- Provides support with coordinating Shop/Lab use for multiple classes and develops a plan to use Shop/Lab space to maximum efficiency in collaboration with instructors.
- Adapts own schedule to accommodate changing needs of classes.

Required Qualifications

- Red Seal Carpentry, Red Seal Cabinetmaker or Industrial Mechanic Millwright Journeyperson Certificate
- Five (5) Years’ experience working in various aspects of the trade.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Sound decision-making ability and problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge of machinery and equipment used in Carpentry Trades programs
- Experienced forklift operator, certification to be provided
- Experienced in working successfully as part of a team and individually.

Preferred Qualifications

- Training or experience in calibration standards and asset.
- Proficient computer skills and experience in material management (purchasing, inventory) e.g. Microsoft word, excel, etc.
- Willingness to learn and keep up to date on technology, and advance skills through courses and PD opportunities.
- Safety training relevant to Carpentry
- Journeyperson’s certificate in multiple trades.

$58,879 to $68,880 annually

Benefits and Compensation Information

An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and perks.
