Role and Facility Information
The Island Health Department of Psychiatry has a full-time opportunity for a Psychiatrist in the beautiful community of Parksville.
In this position you will provide consultation to patients and their families/caregivers, primary care physicians and fellow health care professionals in an outpatient setting. The practice is located in the Oceanside Health Centre, which offers an interdisciplinary team environment comprised of physicians and all allied and community health care providers in one state‑of‑the‑art location serving the communities of Parksville and Qualicum Beach. You will be available to your registered outpatients, with coverage as needed. Community services may consist of attachment to community mental health and substance use treatment teams providing rehab support and case management for adults or with consultation and psychiatric clinical services for primary care referrals.
The successful candidate would be joining a collegial psychiatrist group from acute and community settings across the Central Island region including Oceanside, Port Alberni, Ladysmith, and Nanaimo. Psychiatrists are valuable members of a cooperative interdisciplinary team that includes case management clinicians, nursing,
occupational therapists, rehab support, social workers and psychologists working together to provide comprehensive psychosocial rehabilitation within a recovery‑oriented, culturally safe, and trauma‑informed framework.
Administrative duties of the position, funded by a sessional payment plan, include attending Departmental and multidisciplinary meetings. We provide administrative staff, computer system, integrated EMR, and office space.
Caseload expectation for the community practice is approximately 240-300 clients (ca. 30 per 0.1 FTE), and involves seeing a few new clients every week, managing and discharging community caseload patients, and receiving discharges from ED, hospital inpatient units, and referrals from Oceanside community family physicians.
Full‑scope general psychiatric practice would include evaluation and treatment of mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, OCD, PTSD, personality disorders, ADHD, ASD, eating disorders, adjustment disorders, somatic symptom or functional disorders, brain injury, neurological disorders, and psychiatric aspects of medical conditions.
Compensation and Benefits
Start Date: As soon as possible
Furnished office, computer, telephone and administrative support provided.
May be eligible for additional remuneration in accordance with the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA),
including (subject to change):
- Recruitment Incentive: up to a maximum of $10,000 (pro‑rated based on FTE)
- Relocation: up to a maximum of $15,000 (amount based on location relocating from)
- Flat fee: $7,159.68
- Fee Premium / Retention Premium: 4.62%
- CME: $3,000/annum year 3‑4 and $6,000/annum after 4 years in the community

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital has 224 acute care beds and a 24‑bed inpatient psychiatry unit. In September 2012 our new Emergency Department opened, which had a 4‑bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and busy Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES). Its catchment includes Oceanside residents from Nanoose Bay to Qualicum Beach.
