The Director of Learning Services, Equity & Success (“Director”) joins the district Executive team in providing system-wide leadership in advancing the district's Strategic Plan. As part of this broader work, they are responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing a range of strategies and programs that support academic success, positive cultural identity, and the well-being of Indigenous students. Working in close partnership with the Indigenous Education Council (in particular Tsawwassen First Nation and Musqueam Indian Band), the Director will collaborate with Indigenous families and students, Elders and Knowledge Keepers, Delta school staff, district leadership, federal and provincial agencies, local unions,
and Delta Learning Services staff to inspire the Delta District along our path of Truth and Reconciliation.
The Director, Equity & Success, reports to the Superintendent of Schools.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing strategic leadership for Indigenous Education across the Delta School District
- Supporting district-level leadership that advances decolonizing practices and Indigenous worldviews, fostering relational accountability, guiding strategy, and strengthening alignment across all areas of the organization
- Collaborating with other Directors to provide leadership, vision and direction to the Learning Services department
- Providing leadership to the District Justice and Equity Action Plan (JEAP)
- Developing and sustaining the organizational frameworks that can enable staff and schools to effectively support the success of all Indigenous students
- Establishing cooperative professional learning and leadership structures that centre Indigenous ways of knowing, decolonizing practice, and equity to enhance learning for all students
- Developing a close working relationship with the local First Nations (Tsawwassen First Nation and Musqueam Indian Band) and other Indigenous and First Nations organizations
- Prioritizing the development and inclusion of local First Nations language program(s)
- Working with the Indigenous Education Council in the role of secretariat; fulfilling all Ministry mandates regarding this relationship, including collaborating and reporting on the use of Ministry targeted funding
- Overseeing the collection, management, and reporting local and Ministry of Education Indigenous Student data including 1701 requirements.
- Liaising with Ministry of Education Departments appropriate to responsibilities
- Overseeing the Indigenous Services Canada Nominal Roll and BC Tripartite Education Agreement; supporting the development of Local Education Agreements (LEA) and other Protocol Agreements
- Participating with Budget Officers in the preparation and monitoring of budgets
- Performing other duties as assigned
The preferred candidate will possess the following qualifications, experience and attributes:
- Indigenous Ancestry (First Nation, Metis or Inuit) strongly preferred
- Master's degree in Education and a Teaching Certificate of Qualifications in BC in good standing; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Proven success in formal school or district leadership role(s)
- Ability to provide district leadership and policy direction as part of the District's Strategic Education Leadership Team
- Experience leading and coaching teams in the development and implementation of a range of programs and projects
- Strong knowledge of Indigenous worldviews, communities, history, protocols, culture, successes and contemporary issues
- A strong commitment to Indigenous student success
- Experience working respectfully and collaboratively with First Nations rights holders, Inuit, Metis and Urban indigenous communities
- Collaborative leadership and ability to build trust-based relationships
- Effective communication, advocacy, facilitation, conflict-resolution and relationship-building skills
- Competence in managing large budgets
- Ability to collect and analyze data to drive improved outcomes
