Reporting to the IT Services Manager, the Computer Technician supports Cambridge Public Library’s hardware, software, server infrastructure, and communications.

What You’ll Do

Responsibility for program/service delivery (internal/external), coordination of staff

- Provides technical support to users by evaluating, diagnosing and resolving computer hardware and software problems associated with desktop computers, mobile workstations, printers and networks.
- Recommends, installs, deploys, maintains, and troubleshoots hardware, software, server infrastructure, and communications, at all locations. Escalates incidents as necessary.
- Configures and manages networking equipment, including firewall, routers, VLANs, servers and switches.
- Runs diagnostic reports and reviews logs to monitor operation of all equipment. Routinely monitors network, server and systems performance and reliability through incident reporting and corrective measures.
- Maintains and manages all network infrastructure and resolves any network connectivity issues.
- Recommends, schedules and performs software and hardware improvements, upgrades, patches, reconfigurations, and/or purchases.
- Sets end user accounts, permissions, access rights, and storage allocations in accordance with best-practices regarding privacy, security, and Cambridge Public Library policies.
- Tracks Help Desk requests, service calls and problem resolution in Help Desk ticket system and maintains ongoing communication through updates to staff concerning status of their Help Desk tickets.
- Coordinates with security vendor(s) on Managed Detection and Response incidents; Reviews action reports and provides recommendation to improve our responses/procedures.
- Maintains inventory records, and systems logs for all computer hardware and software. Ensures that documentation and knowledge bases are kept up to date and maintained.
- Supports and monitors data backup and recovery hardware, software and routines.
- Occasional interactions with the public (directional and general inquiries).

Project management (planning, producing, implementation, monitoring, reporting)

- In consultation with the Senior Computer Specialist, acts as project lead for departmental and system projects as required.

Business planning, develop policies and enterprise management

- Collects and reports monthly and yearly statistics as needed. Reviews how statistics are collected and make recommendations on how to improve or automate the collection and reporting process.

Requirement to adapt, modify, procedures, programs or inform policy development

- Makes recommendations on IT related policies and procedures to the IT Services Manager.
- Other duties as required.

What You Bring

To be qualified for and successful in the role, you should have:

Required

- Two (2) years post-secondary degree/diploma in computer sciences, computer engineering or related field
- One (1) year previous recent experience working in an IT support role, service desk
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office/365
- Experience troubleshooting laptops, desktops, printers, mobile devices, and peripherals




- Demonstrated proficiency in administering the following technologies: Windows Domain environment, Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, Microsoft Azure, DNS, DHCP
- Demonstrated working knowledge of server environments such as VMware Vsphere
- Demonstrated working knowledge with firewall configuration and maintenance.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of database and content management systems.
- Demonstrated ability to use ticketing systems.
- Experience with cyber security monitoring with SYSMON and SIEM
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals including employees, external contacts and the public.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a demanding environment.
- Ability to handle changes in priorities, work on diverse tasks, and adapt to evolving organizational needs.

Starting salary: $59,561 per annum (Level 7 in our salary grid).

Hours: This is a full-time permanent position, working 70 hours in a bi-weekly period.

Must be able to work pre-determined hours of work; on occasion may be asked to work additional hours or hours outside of regular schedule.
