Assistant Curator
Full-Time, Contract(up to 12 months)

Under the direction of the Senior Curator, the Assistant Curator is responsible for curating exhibitions and developing related programming; overseeing the care and maintenance of the Gallery’s permanent collection of contemporary Canadian fibre art; and performing administrative functions that support Gallery operations, including day-to-day needs.
What You’ll Do
Responsibility for program/service delivery (internal/external), coordination of staff
- Oversees the care, documentation, exhibition, and conservation of the collection.
- Maintains all documentation pertaining to Cambridge Art Galleries’ permanent collection, including accessioning/deaccessioning and cataloguing.
- Assists the Senior Curator with negotiating copyright, reproduction rights, and exhibition rights with artists and works represented in the permanent collection and external reproduction requests.
- In consultation with the Senior Curator, coordinates the loan of collection artworks to other museums/galleries, institutions, or traveling exhibitions.
- Works with the Exhibition Coordinator to maintain the permanent collection. Makes recommendations on conservation needs and coordinates with conservators in consultation with the Senior Curator.
- Networks with curators from other institutions and members of the visual arts community to promote the exhibition program and encourage collaborations.
- Maintains Gallery website and exhibition and event listings in Communico. This includes entering and updating data and images for exhibitions, events, and other Gallery activities; works with the Marketing team to prepare promotional materials on exhibitions and related programming.
- Provides key support for exhibitions and related programs, including taking minutes of planning meetings, scheduling, data entry, budget tracking, contract preparation, and correspondence.
- Researches and writes original content and interpretive material to engage the public with exhibitions and the permanent collection; coordinates the production of this material with graphic designers, printers and other contributors, both internally and externally.
- Frequent interactions with the public (exhibition interpretations).
Project management (planning, producing, implementation, monitoring, reporting)
- Conceptualizes, researches, develops, and implements select exhibitions and projects; designs and prepares the overall installation and deinstallation plan for select exhibitions and works with the Exhibition Coordinator to implement them. Assists with exhibition installation when required.
- In consultation with Senior Curator, plans production and development of select exhibitions and projects; securing agreements with artists, lending institutions or individuals within the allotted budget.
Business planning, develop policies and enterprise management
- Develops exhibition/ project and program budgets in consultation with Senior Curator within the annual exhibition and program budgets determined by the Senior Curator.
- Prepares insurance information with the Exhibition Coordinator for submission to the insurer (by CPL’s Director, Finance and Facilities or Senior Curator) for select exhibitions/projects.
- Under the direction of the Senior Curator, prepares operating and project grant applications and reports, including drafting written content about exhibitions and related programming, gathering statistical information, coordinating charts and reports, and compiling support materials.
Requirement to adapt, modify, procedures, programs or inform policy development
- Assists the Senior Curator to support development of policies and long-range plans
Other duties as required including, but not limited to:
- Assists with set up requirements for Gallery programs, exhibition openings, and events.
- Responsible for various administrative tasks including monitoring of office supplies, ordering materials.
- Oversees co-op students by coordinating schedules, prepares tasks, managing outcomes.
What You Bring To be qualified for and successful in the role, you should have:
Required
- Post-secondary degree in Art History, Museum Studies, Visual Arts
- Two (2) years - Prior related experience
- One (1) year - Experience with budgeting, funding requirements and granting agencies:
- One (1) year - Previous experience with Collection management systems and graphic design software
- Demonstrated knowledge of proper handling of artworks
- Demonstrated advanced proficiency with task-specific software (Microsoft Office Suite and virtual meeting software)
- Excellent verbal and written communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Superior organization and time management skills to address competing priorities
- Ability to work in a rapid-paced environment and managing multiple deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate professionally with internal and external partners
- An inclusive and empathetic approach with a service-oriented mindset
- A passion for supporting the diverse interests and needs of the Cambridge community
Preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian and contemporary art, exhibition procedures and collections management
- Demonstrated knowledge of handling fibre art

Wage: $35.78 per hour (Level 8 in our salary grid).
Hours: This is a full-time position, 35 hours in a weekly period
Schedule: Typically, Monday to Friday 9:30am-5:30pm
You may be required to work additional hours or to adjust your schedule to fulfil your responsibilities related to events occurring outside of the regular work week.
