Personal Support Worker - Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - CAD$1,080.00/week

Description

Caregiver Opportunity – Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (High-Acuity, Insurance-Funded) Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (8 hours/day) Location: Sault Ste. Marie, ON (Saint James Street area)

- ️ Significant Note — High-Acuity Placement, Seizure Protocol Required: This is a demanding placement requiring a highly experienced, reliable PSW. The client has a traumatic brain injury, active seizure disorder, and mobility limitations. She has had serious negative experiences with previous caregivers — including being left alone, a no-call no-show, and an uncertified worker who caused injury. Only caregivers with demonstrated experience in complex care, seizure awareness, and a strong track record of reliability should apply. Criminal record check, vulnerable sector check, and current CPR/First Aid certification are mandatory before placement.

About the Client: This role supports a younger woman living at home in Sault Ste. Marie who sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) following a collision with a transport truck. Her care is funded through an insurance claim via Intact Insurance. She is sharp, self-aware, and knowledgeable about her own care needs — she was previously training as a PSW and RN before her accident and understands the standards she expects. Her fiancé (POA) lives in the home and is actively involved in her care coordination. She is never to be left alone.

The client sustained a TBI and has focal seizures throughout the day as well as occasional grand mal seizures. Seizures can occur with or without warning — the caregiver must be prepared to respond at all times. She has right-side mobility limitations and uses a wheelchair full-time, though she manages most of her own transfers independently. She is incontinent and has her own supplies (diapers, pads) — the caregiver is responsible for assisting with incontinence care as needed.

She has an allergy to latex — gloves and PPE must be latex-free. The client supplies her own PPE. A counsellor visits the home every Tuesday. A housekeeper comes twice a week — housekeeping is not part of this role. All scheduling changes, late arrivals, and absences must be communicated directly to her POA (fiancé), not to the client, as memory is affected by her injury. A whiteboard in the home tracks her monthly schedule, appointments, medications, and allergies — the caregiver is expected to reference it. Pets in the home: one cat (friendly, keeps to herself) and one dog (belongs to brother-in-law, kept secured). Female caregiver required. Caregiver must have a valid driver's licence and reliable transportation — punctual 8:00 AM arrival is non-negotiable.

Responsibilities:

Personal care — assisting with bathing, grooming, and dressing each morning Seizure monitoring and response — remaining present and attentive at all times; following seizure protocol; calling emergency services if the client is injured Incontinence care — assisting with diaper changes and hygiene following seizure-related accidents Light meal preparation — opening packages, preparing simple meals, and assisting with eating as needed Appointment accompaniment — accompanying the client to medical and other appointments via arranged transportation (caregiver does not drive the client)

Mobility assistance — assisting with movement outside the home; the client manages indoor transfers independently Presence and supervision — remaining on premises for the full shift; the client is not to be left alone under any circumstances Communication — reporting any incidents, changes, or concerns to the POA promptly

What We're Looking For:

PSW certification with demonstrated experience in high-acuity, complex personal care Experience with seizure disorders — understanding of focal and grand mal seizures and appropriate response protocols Current CPR and First Aid certification — mandatory Criminal record check and vulnerable sector check — mandatory Valid driver's licence and reliable personal transportation — required for punctual arrival Fluent English — clear communication is essential given the client's cognitive and memory challenges Extremely reliable and punctual — this client has experienced no-call no-shows and abandonment during care; this is non-negotiable Female caregiver required Latex allergy awareness — all PPE used must be latex-free Located in or near Sault Ste. Marie (Saint James Street area)

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (8 hours/day). Weekends and holidays are covered separately. The caregiver must remain on premises for the full shift. The POA must be given a minimum of 24 hours notice for any schedule changes or absences. Care is needed as soon as possible.
