Fisheries Guardian Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY

To assist the ‘Na̱mg̱is First Nation to sustainably manage natural resources and habitat within, and adjacent to ‘Na̱mg̱is territory. This is a seasonal position (May to November 2026).

REPORTS TO: Aquatic Resources Manager, Natural Resources Department

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

- Positively represent ‘Namgis to members and the outside world in all aspects of their
- duties
- Neatly complete all field monitoring data sheets and ensure they are digitally entered
- and stored
- Administrative and reporting duties as assigned
- Field activities include:
- Conducting stock assessments
- Conducting habitat inspections and assessments
- Conducting enforcement compliance monitoring (observe, record, report only)
- Conducting stream enhancement and maintenance
- Conducting physical and biological sampling
- Conducting other aquatic resource related monitoring activities
- Conducting field management activities at recreational sites
- Participating in ‘Namgis Food Security related activities

- Participating in Community relations and education activities
- Ensure secure operation and maintenance of equipment including vessels, all-terrain
- vehicles, trucks, trailers, etc.
- Undertake training as assigned
- To work early morning, evening and weekend shifts as assigned
- Other related duties and projects as may be required from time to time

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

- Minimum 2 years experience in an aquatic related field work




- Ability to work in challenging marine and wilderness environments in a safe, efficient and team-oriented manner
- Ability to perform complex measuring, recording and reporting functions related to natural resources management, habitat restoration, etc.
- Experience in the operation of marine vessels
- Ability to engage with ‘Namgis members, the general public, and government officials in a courteous manner
- Knowledge of Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw culture
- Knowledge of community-base fisheries management
- Knowledge of North Pacific marine species and ecosystems

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS

- Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent
- Class 5 BC Driver’s License
- SVOP, MEDA3; Marine First Aid, and Radio Operators Certificate
- Electrofishing Certificate
- Swiftwater Rescue Certificate
- GPS & Radar Experience
- Vancouver Island University Natural Resources Extension Program Certificate or First Nations Stewardship Technician Training Program Certificate

UNUSUAL JOB FEATURES

- Predominantly a field position but does have related office duties
- Physically demanding job that includes strenuous labour
- Tasks include travel by ferry, truck and boat to work site
