The Opportunity
Pioneer Construction Inc. is seeking hardworking and safety‑focused individuals to join our team as a Health & Safety Coordinator based at our Dubreuilville, Ontario operations. The Health and Safety Coordinator will assist with the development, maintenance, and review of a comprehensive occupational health and safety program. They will also ensure awareness of and compliance with company standards, requirements, policies and procedures to minimise risks and improve health and safety performance.
Your Day‑to‑Day
- Conduct regular workplace/site inspection including the ability to monitor and recommend corrective action.
- Collaborate with Managers and Supervisors to monitor compliance and identify safety issues.
- Promote and maintain a strong culture of health and safety across the company through health and safety programmes and initiatives.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of health and safety policies and procedures and ensure that they reflect best practices and current policies / regulations.
- Provide awareness to workers, supervisors, and managers about regulatory requirements including company health and safety standards, and industry and mining regulations.
- Execute and/or coordinate internal inspections, internal audits, and investigations and initiate and realise corrective actions in case of deviations.
- Deliver safety orientation and training for all new and existing employees.
- Maintain records of all health and safety‑related training.
- With the support of management when required, conduct hazard assessments and risk assessments on equipment and products.
- Complete inspection forms and ensure proper and accurate recording of health and safety documentation.
- Assist Human Resources department with workplace investigations.
- Attend Health and Safety and project site meetings and training sessions.
- Assist with the maintenance of SDS Information and perform follow‑ups on jobsite inspection sheets.
- Make recommendations on personal protective equipment and oversee approved safety supplies list.
- Analyse the relevant lagging and leading indicators to take or recommend appropriate actions.
- Set and monitor yearly programme targets (i.e., meeting attendance, minor incidents, etc.) and compile those statistics.
- Participate in various projects as they relate to the health and safety function of the company.
- Follow all company, client, and regulatory health and safety policies, procedures, and standards.
- Wear and maintain required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Adhere to established safety and emergency procedures and report hazards or incidents promptly.
- Perform physically demanding work including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, crouching, climbing, crawling, repetitive reaching, and extended periods of standing throughout the workday.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including inclement weather.
- Work evenings, weekends, and extended hours as required to meet operational and project demands.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
- Relevant post‑secondary training in Occupational Health and Safety or a combination of education and experience that is determined to be equivalent.
- Possession of a valid G Licence.
- Standard First Aid, CPR and AED Certification.
- Strong commitment to safety and teamwork.
Considered an Asset:
- Ability to operate heavy equipment.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Health and Safety professional is preferred.
- Surface Miner Common Core.
- Professional Health and Safety designation such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC), Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST). Certified National Construction Safety Officer (NSCO)
or working towards designation.
- Joint Health and Safety Certification.
- Prior experience in the construction industry.
Skills & Abilities:
- Experience in a related Health and Safety position within the construction, surface mining, and industrial industries.
- Knowledgeable and highly competent health and safety professional who is passionate about Health and Safety and enjoys interacting with people.
- Familiar with Workers’ Compensation Board regulations and policies and work collaboratively with HR to provide support.
- Excellent investigative skills to handle a range of incidents, accidents, and conflicts.
- Successfully passed comprehensive pre‑employment third party testing requirements (drug and alcohol testing and a Criminal Background Check and any other requirements they impose on contractors).
- Good understanding of current legislation and regulations as it pertains to health and safety.
- Ability to provide detailed reports and collaborate on the development of safety procedures.
- Good understanding of data analysis and risk assessment.
- Proficiency with database applications and administrative systems, specifically Microsoft Office and Windows.
- Strong organisational skills and an ability to work alone, prioritise tasks and responsibilities accordingly.
- Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication skills with supervisors, colleagues and clients.
- Ability to adapt to changing job requirements and schedules.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Professional attitude and strong work ethic.
