Application Deadline:Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at 11:59 pm The Opportunity The Solid Waste Operations Branch is a branch within the Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability Department. This branch is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's Landfill site, which includes non-hazardous solid waste disposal, household hazardous waste receiving and disposal, leaf and yard waste disposal and composting, and solid waste collection and disposal.
Responsibilities also include the operation of the scalehouse, which is the first point of contact for customers and waste entering the landfill site.
Under the general guidance and direction of the Supervisor of Solid Waste Receiving, the Scalehouse Attendant (PT) position is responsible for providing front-line support to customers who intend to dispose of various waste types at the Barrie Landfill. This position provides effective front line customer service through daily scale house activities at the Barrie Landfill Site. This position operates electronic weigh scales in accordance with the Weights and Measures Act, screens inbound waste for compliance with the Landfill Site Environmental Compliance Approval and collects associated user fees in accordance with the Municipal Fees By-law.
The Scalehouse
Attendant (PT) also uses customized computer software that integrates with the weigh scales to calculate disposal fees, create transaction records, produce daily cash reconciliation records, and track waste transfers in accordance with Provincial legislation. Finally, this position provides customers with information regarding the operation of the Landfill Site and the municipal waste management system and assists with the resolution of customer services issues.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- One (1) year College Certificate in Business Administration or Environmental Technology

Experience
- Two (2) years of cumulative part-time experience or one (1) year of full-time experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position
- Demonstrated experience with cash handling, customer service and basic accounting principles
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
- General knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act
- Working knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements: Environmental Compliance Approval issued to the Barrie Landfill; Weights and Measures Act; City of Barrie Fees By- Law; Waste Management Legislation, including EPA Reg. 347
- Working knowledge of the City of Barrie's Curbside Waste Collection Program and Policies
• Extended Producer Programs under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act
- Demonstrated ability to
- utilize conflict resolution skills to effectively handle difficult clients
- utilize mathematical skills for cash handling and cash reconciliation
- communicate effectively through in-person interactions, phone conversations and digital communication
- conduct inspections and determine if there are issues of non-compliance based on established standards
- observe priorities, meet deadlines and manage workload demands
- deal with difficult customers, diffuse emotionally-charged situations, and resolve customer issues in a diplomatic and professional manner

Hours: The normal hours of work are up to and including 24 hours per week with a varying schedule to support business demand
Wage: This is a casual part-time non-union position with the following 2026 pay range:
- Hourly Pay Rate: $30.70 to $36.76
