OVERVIEW:
The John Prince Research Forest (JPRF) is hiring a Wildlife and Forestry Assistant. We are seeking to fill a 10-month position but will consider shorter-term appointments for the summer/fall field season only.
The JPRF is a 16,500-ha forested area located 45 km northwest of the town of Fort St. James and is co-managed by the University of Northern British Columbia, Tl’azt’en Nation, and Binche Whut’en. The JPRF develops innovative approaches to natural resource conservation and management that integrate First Nations’ traditional knowledge with western scientific approaches.
A long-term monitoring program investigating the influences of climate and landscape change on multiple wildlife species has been ongoing across the JPRF since 2015.
POSITION SUMMARY:
During summer/early fall (2026) and winter (early 2027), this position will be part of a field crew responsible for maintaining a network of monitoring sites equipped with camera traps, hair snares, and acoustic recording devices. Vegetation and habitat assessments will be conducted at monitoring sites to quantify forest structure and composition. There will be opportunities to assist with a variety of other wildlife research and monitoring projects.
Extensive use of 4x4 trucks, ATVs, and snowmobiles will be required. The successful candidate must be able to work under a wide range of environmental conditions (rain, wind, insects, and extreme temperatures).
From late October to early January, the position will involve reduced fieldwork and a greater focus on data entry, data summarization, literature reviews, and report writing.
Housing is provided at Cinnabar Research Station on Tezzeron Lake within the Research Forest. Daily field activities will be coordinated by the Field Coordinator.
A portion of the funding for this position is provided through a federal grant; therefore, preference will be given to applicants aged 30 and under.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Check and maintain camera traps, hair snares, and acoustic recording units using ATVs, trucks, snowmobiles, and on foot
· Conduct vegetation and habitat sampling at monitoring sites
· Perform data entry and management (including image and video data)
· Assist with field gear and camp maintenance
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors
· Ability to work safely in remote settings
· Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
· Positive attitude and adaptability to challenging field conditions
· Ability to navigate using maps, compass, and GPS units
· Solid work ethic and attention to detail
· Ability to hike long distances
· Physically fit, with the ability to lift and carry >50 lbs
· Valid Canadian driver’s license (no restrictions)
· Ability to live and work in a small camp setting
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· College-level coursework in wildlife biology, forestry, or a related field
· Experience using camera traps in ecological studies
· Experience with camera trap data management and organization
· Field experience conducting wildlife surveys
· Experience operating 4WD vehicles and ATVs
· Experience with Excel and GIS
· Experience summarizing and analyzing data and contributing to reports TO APPLY:
