We are looking for a dynamic and collaborative leader who wants to make an impact on our organization and community in this exciting upcoming vacancy as Assistant Town Solicitor (Litigation and Risk Management)! With a focus on litigation and dispute resolution, risk management, insurance claims management, by-law prosecutions, and planning and development law,
you will provide high-quality legal advice, research opinions and service to internal clients in realization of the Town of Innisfil’s Strategic Plan 2030, being true to the values: “Community First. Future Ready. Balance Always.”.
As a member of our Legal Services Leadership Team, and under the direction of the Manager of Legal, you will be responsible for the provision of a full range of legal services to the Corporation, as well as:
- Providing professional legal counsel and recommendations to Council/Committees, Directors, and Town departmental staff on the diverse and broad range of issues affecting the municipality in collaboration with the Manager of Legal.
- Managing the Town’s insurance program and acting as the primary point of contact with the Town’s insurer; monitoring claims and notices of claim, gathering evidence and information and liaising with adjusters, claims examiners and external counsel.
- Acting as the primary Legal and Risk Officer for the Town’s Emergency Operations Committee, reviewing and advising the Town and its partner organizations on provincial and federal legislative and regulatory amendments and their impacts on operations.
- Protecting the rights and legal interest of the Town through Courts/Tribunals and alternative dispute resolution; attending and dealing with civil and administrative litigation at all stages.
- Representing the Town on various proceedings with a focus on matters arising out of the Planning Act, the Ontario Building Code Act, Development Charges Act, the Ontario Heritage Act, by-law prosecutions under the Provincial Offences Act, as well as civil litigation matters.
Job Requirements
The preferred candidate holds the following:
- A university degree in Law (L.L.B or J.D.).
- Licensed to practice as a Lawyer by the Law Society of Ontario.
- Five (5) years’ experience as a lawyer, including litigation experience.
- Experience before Ontario courts with respect to administrative law appeals, judicial reviews and by-law enforcement would be an asset.
- Experience in municipal regulatory and/or government administrative environment, and experience working with elected officials/boards would be an asset.
- A valid Class "G" driver's licence in valuable standing and reliable vehicle to use on corporate business.
- Requirement to accommodate deadlines, peak period workloads and urgent situations that will extend beyond the normal workday, and availability to attend evening and/or weekend meetings or other events as required.
