Who we are:
WaterBridge Ferries is a private-owned ferry operator company based in Nakusp, British Columbia, Canada. As contractors to the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, we are responsible for the safe ferry passage of people in the communities surrounding the Arrow Lakes in BC. Our ferry crews are Transport Canada trained and certified. We pride ourselves on the impact we make on the local economies in which we operate.
Who you are:
As the Marine Manager - Operations based out of our Nakusp, BC location you will actively lead and drive continuous improvement of our freshwater passenger ferry operations. You are a strong leader with high influence who is able to address operational issues in a positive and productive manner, in a unionized setting. As a hands-on versatile leader, you will guide the crews to ensure smooth and cost-effective operations of the fleet. Your level-controlled demeanor enables you to make sound, effective business decisions during times of pressure or stress. Reporting directly to the General Manager, you will ensure delivery of superior operating performance and inspire an open innovative learning environment for all crew members.
Key Accountabilities:
· Lead a team of Mariners operating a freshwater passenger ferry service ensuring they work with safety as a priority
· Provides leadership, coaching and support to crew through an on-vessel presence
· Builds effective relationships with employees that boost morale
· Develop crew competency in emergency response execution
· Interface with Federal and Provincial Regulatory agencies
· Develop regular, ad hoc, and monthly and annual reports including both qualitative and quantitative data
· Conduct risk assessment and implement standard operating procedures
· Ensure the collective agreement is adhere to
· Monitor crew to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and other governing agencies
· Maintains a visible presence on the vessel during all phases of operations inclusive of periodic voyages for the purposes of vetting operations. Participates in vessel inspections
· Collaborate with the Safety and Compliance Manager to address unsafe equipment or practices
· Review labour requirements in advance and schedule accordingly to ensure adequate manning across all vessels. Partner with Human Resources on manpower planning
· Partner with the Fleet Mechanical Manager on proactive vessel maintenance programs
· Participate in additional company projects as required
Qualifications/Skills/Experience:
· Operational management experience of 5 or more years with direct reports
· Maritime or other marine based operational experience years preferred
· Experience managing others in a unionized environment is an asset
· Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license or better and a clean driver abstract
· Experience working with the public or external customers
· Project management experience is an asset
· Proficient with computer applications including Microsoft Suite and SharePoint
Location
- The successful candidate must be living in or willing to relocate permanently to the
Nakusp, BC area. A relocation allowance will be provided.
Working Conditions:
· Work is mostly performed on board freshwater vessels and ship repair facility environments
· The vessel is subject to weather impacts and may result in a cold, hot or wet working environment
· Occasional projects may demand lifting, working long hours and around heavy-duty equipment
· Occasional operation of heavy-duty equipment such as crane truck, loader or tugboat
· Day time travel required between work sites
Work Hours:
· Monday – Friday 07:00 – 16:00 or as required by current work load. This position is part of a continuous operation. The incumbent will need the flexibility to be “on call” and available after hours. This schedule may include weekends and/or holidays. Overtime may be required without notice.
Compensation:
· This position is non-union and completes work in a unionized setting. You will receive a market-competitive salary, full benefits including contributions to a pension plan and access to a company vehicle.
