Job Summary
As part of Calgary Economic Development’s Business Development team, this position will support business retention, expansion, and investment attraction to the Calgary region. Working closely with businesses and leaders in industry, this position will position Calgary for long-term economic success within our priority industries.
The role requires proactive engagement with local and international Defence, Energy & Environment companies to promote Calgary as a preferred destination for investment that leads to attraction and expansion of companies.
Key Responsibilities
Partnership Development
- Lead CED’s efforts to collaborate with Defence, Energy & Environment partners on specific projects/initiative or ongoing relationships within Calgary that would expand jobs/investment in the region.
- Prepare customized investor attraction packages, compiling relevant information for a key opportunity
- Formulate and present business cases to target audience, responding to inquiries and actively listening for opportunities
- Bid on specific investment attraction opportunities as available
- Negotiate with partner organizations how CED will support shared client accounts
- Responsible for quarterly budget forecast accuracy and spending activities
- Determine what may be an impeding company growth; addresses the barriers and provides solutions
- Provide direction and guidance to the account manager(s) responsible for clients that fall into the specific industry areas
Sector & Ecosystem Development
- Act as a spokesperson and storyteller to profile Calgary’s strengths in Defence, Energy & Environment; as well as other related industries
- Share case studies, lessons learned and partnership collaboration with other BDMs to replicate success where possible
- Reach out to local and global markets through Trade Commissioner Service, intermediaries or lead generation consultants
- Compile business intelligence and other available data for enhanced investment into Calgary
- Stay current with local, national, and international industry trends, understands future sector growth areas
- Network with others,
providing referrals to industry/government contacts and reciprocating introductions with partners/industry executives
- As needed, develop major international missions, events, advocacy strategies, research strategies, etc. – to support sector advancement
- Partner with educational institutions / training institutions to provide information and work to develop needed skills for prospective employment expansion areas

Education
Undergraduate degree in Marketing, Communications, Economics, Political Science, Commerce or related diploma.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years experience in Business Development, Energy or related field
- Minimum of 2 years experience of account leadership or managing sales team.
- A good understanding of economic development or a membership in industry associations is an added advantage.
Key Competencies
- Experience with CMS and CRM platforms
- Interpersonal skills / strong verbal communications skills and ability to negotiate and persuade.
- Demonstrated understanding of, and effectiveness in, sales and marketing from lead generation through to complex deal strategy.
- Understanding of the local business environment, government, industry, culture, and regulatory workplace
- Demonstrated knowledge of the local and international market / ecosystem and ability to build relationships with key international stakeholders (government/agency/associations).
- Proven project management skills with the ability to multi-task several projects at once.
- Decision making capability to source and select appropriate projects for Calgary Economic Development and deliver timely results in a responsible and accountable manner.
- Exceptional business relationship management skills with a demonstrated commitment to customer service.
- Effective at working independently and as a member of a team with an ability to collaborate and build consensus across the business.
- Experience working with politically sensitive and confidential information.
- Understanding of international trade.
- Ability to travel globally.
