The Board of Directors plays a pivotal leadership role within the organization, providing strategic oversight, governance, and direction to ensure the company's long-term success. Members are responsible for guiding executive management, making high-level decisions, and fostering sustainable growth. This position offers an opportunity to influence organizational policies, uphold fiduciary duties, and contribute to the mission and vision of the organization.

BACKGROUND

Durham Community Development Services is a community-based, non-profit organization committed to reducing barriers and improving access to essential services for individuals and families across the Greater Toronto Area, including Durham Region.

As a growing organization, we are focused on building a strong governance structure that promotes strategic thinking, innovation, and accountability. We are seeking dedicated Board Directors who can contribute their expertise, expand our network, and help align our work with the diverse needs of the communities we serve.

REQUIREMENTS

- Live or work in the Greater Toronto Area, preferably in Durham Region
- Experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Governance and board leadership
- Legal or regulatory matters
- Finance, accounting, or risk management
- Human resources and labour relations
- Community services, social work, or public sector
- Strong understanding of community issues, including:
- Poverty and social inequities
- Social determinants of health
- Barriers faced by underserved populations




- Lived experience, community leadership, or representation from diverse communities is strongly encouraged

TIME COMMITMENT

- Attend approximately 6-8 board meetings per year (1.5–2 hours each, virtual or hybrid)
- Participate in at least one board committee (meetings held virtually)
- Commit approximately 5-10 hours per month, including preparation and occasional events

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Durham Community Development Services is governed by a Board of Directors responsible for providing strategic leadership, governance oversight, and accountability.

The Board:

- Sets the strategic direction of the organization
- Ensures alignment with the organization’s charitable purposes
- Oversees financial management and resource use
- Supports and evaluates organizational leadership as the organization grows
- Monitors program effectiveness and community impact
- Strengthens governance practices and organizational sustainability

Board members also act as ambassadors for the organization by:

- Supporting fundraising and community engagement
- Building relationships with partners and stakeholders
- Promoting the organization’s mission and impact
