310T Mechanic Apprentice

The City of Orillia is less than 90 minutes from the Greater Toronto Area. The City of Orillia is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the position of 310T Mechanic Apprentice.

Reporting to the Manager of Fleet, the 310T Mechanic Apprentice supports the inspection, preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of a diverse municipal fleet of mobile and stationary equipment. Working under the guidance of licensed technicians, the apprentice will develop technical competencies required to achieve 310T certification while contributing to fleet reliability, safety, regulatory compliance, and lifecycle optimization. The role is structured to provide progressive, hands-on learning aligned with the Ontario apprenticeship framework.

Candidates must be a registered apprentice in the province of Ontario.

The City of Orillia offers a competitive wage and benefits package, and registration with the OMERS pension plan. This is a Unionized position. The salary for this position is $26.01 per hour based on a 40-hour work week. 310T Mechanic Apprentice

Position Synopsis and Purpose

Reporting to the Manager of Fleet, the 310T Mechanic Apprentice supports the inspection, preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of a diverse municipal fleet of mobile and stationary equipment. Working under the guidance of licensed technicians, the apprentice will develop technical competencies required to achieve 310T certification while contributing to fleet reliability, safety, regulatory compliance, and lifecycle optimization. Asset Maintenance and Repair

- Assist licensed mechanics with diagnostics, servicing, and repair of heavy, medium and light-duty vehicles and equipment, including fire apparatus and stationary assets.
- Participate in preventative and predictive maintenance programs.
- Support service inspections, safety checks and operational testing.
- Learn and apply fault identification processes using diagnostic tools and current fleet technologies.
- Assist with welding, fabrication, and minor repairs as skill level progresses.
- Maintain a protected and organized work environment in compliance with corporate safety standards and PPE requirements.
- Provide support during peak operational periods, including winter control and emergency response as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of Fleet operations.

Administration

- Assist in documentation of inspections, repairs, parts usage, and compliance.
- Supporting inventory accuracy, parts ordering, parts tracking, stock usage, and coordination of replacement components.

Human Resources

- Actively participate in apprenticeship training (in school and on the job).
- Attend training seminars as provided by the City.
- Safety Meetings and training as provided by the City.

10%

- Note: All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.





Minimum Qualifications

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent.
- Registered as a 310T Truck and Coach Apprentice or eligible and willing to register within a defined timeframe.

Experience

- First aid and WHMIS training an asset.
- Familiarity with hand and power tools.
- Previous exposure to mechanical repair environments (co-op, shop experience, or entry level role) considered and asset.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability

- Demonstrated interest in heavy equipment, truck and municipal fleet operations.
- Mechanical aptitude with a willingness to learn and take action.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail.
- Understanding of safe work practices.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and judgment skills with the ability to work in a team environment.

Physical Demands

- Required Regular physical activity including climbing on and off equipment, lifting, pulling, and handling heavy components.
- Work performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
- Exposure to noise, vibration, chemicals, fuels, and other hazardous materials; required use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Ongoing risk of minor injuries, with occasional potential for more serious incidents inherent to mechanical work.
- Confined space and fall arrest equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required in accordance with City policies and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Position Requirements

- Possess and maintain a valid class ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license with an acceptable driver’s abstract.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a clean Criminal Record Check is required for this position.
- Availability for overtime and flexible hours to support emergencies and peak operational demands
- Participation in a rotating on-call schedule during the winter season, including evenings and weekends may be required as training progresses.
- Ability to respond to after-hours call-outs within 30 minutes as training progresses.
- Must supply and maintain an adequate set of personal mechanical tools suitable for shop environment.
